RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Suggest you take the engine apart and take a look at every thing. Without a propellor the RPM would have increased significantly so you should take a look at everything to see if there are parts that are bent or broken. I do not know how it would be possible for the timing to change with out significant damage to the cam gear. If you need help with this job I have a Power point presentation that can help you. The suggesting that the valves may be bent or burnt is very possible.

Thanks for the replies guys. I think it was the valves. They were loose. I got it started a little while ago and it came up to power nicely with no issues. Nice RPM. Adjusted the low end a little due to stumbling on acceleration. But all appears well!

reyn3545 - i picked up an old PICA Waco 1/6 scale as guys were packing up for $50! Needs some TLC but definitely an oldtimer with lots of character. it has an old enya 60 on it but is very heavy & i have saito looking for a home.
RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
That sounds great! Glad you found a bargain. There are always lots of deals down there. I just have a basement full of stuff that I don't get to fly often enough.... and a new ziroli kit, still in the box, and a Baron twin engine ARF that should show up next week... I gotta stop this stuff some day!

I guess you went to Perry today? I started to drive down, but decided to stay away for the same reason.

A guy in my club bought my Saito .82a NIB for me there a few years ago for $230.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hi guys
I'm looking for some help here with a saito 100, i'm in the porces of replacing the cylinder but it seems that both rocker arm pins are stuck i can't get them out, I tried heating that part of the cylinder to loosen up the pins but it didn't work I don't want to break aything buecause it's a bit hard to me to get new parts
is there any "correct" way of removing them if so please let me know
thanks in advance
Sergio

Sergio,
They are usually a bit stubborn to get out. I got a large screwdriver and ground down the blade to fit the small slot to get more torque & that usually works. Be careful you don't strip the slot out or new parts are you're only alternative.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Thanks for the info guys i guess i will just get a new screwdriver for that specific task and usea heat again if not I won't have choice but to get them new with the rocker arms hope the screwdriver works bucause I'll have to wait another month to run the engine
RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Sergio if you can get the cylinder set up on the bench right with the back of the rocker arm well supported try this.Firmly engage the right size screwdriver in the slot but before trying to unscrew anything give the handle of the screwdriver a good smack with a hammer, breaks the seal most times. Not to hard now

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Help! I finally had a chance to start my Saito 180 today, but I'm not familiar with 4 stroke operation, this is my first one.
I can only get about 6600 RPM with the 18X6-10 Zinger prop that came on it. Also I get very little change in RPM from mid stick to full, maybe a couple hundred RPM if any. The engine seems to be surging while it is running making it real difficult to measure the RPM, the RPM changes as much as 600-800 RPM when it was surging. I did manage to eliminate some of the surging, but still am not getting any RPM.
My glow igniter battery went down so I had to quit fooling with it until I can find a way to recharge it, it has onboard glow, and the charger wasn't with it when I got the plane. I tried to use my stick igniter but it won't fit in where the glow plug is due to the way it is mounted on the air frame.
Is it me or should I be getting more RPM than this?

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
It's not unusual to see very little RPM change from half to full throttle on these 4-strokes. The throttle arm opens up airflow through the carb, and above about half or 3/4 throttle, you won't see much difference. You may want to set up a throttle curve so that half throttle gives you half the RPM between idle and full.
I don't know what RPM you should expect on that prop, but I wouldn't use the reference numbers from Horizon as a target... I don't think I've seen a motor/prop combo turn those numbers ever. If you're pulling a 13 pound or so plane around with authority... the 180 is doing its job!
The surging is usually an indication of an air leak. Check the screws around the carb, also make sure you don't have any air leaks in your fuel tube from tank to carb. You've probably already checked both of these.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
No, actually I didn't. I pulled the cowl off to check my glow plug which is when I found my glow battery was weak. I left the cowl off so it should be easy to check the fuel lines and screws though. Once I determined the glow driver was dead I quite fooling with it till tomorrow so I'll check those out before I start again.
Do you think this should be in the ball park on the RPM? Horizon site calls for 9600 with a 16x8, so could mine be in the ball park with the 18X6-10.
Another question do you set the HSN using the same technique as a two stroke?
Thanks for your help

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Chunk, the 18x6-10 is too much prop, I tried a 20x6-10 on a Zenoah G45 and it could only manage 7,000. The surge is from being over loaded and causing the airflow velocity through the carb to be to slow for steady fuel draw. Those 6-10 props turn hard, I don't use them anymore.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I never had much success with a 6-10 prop.
They seemed to be 10 when they needed to be 6
and 6 when they needed to be 10.
I prefer the single pitch props.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Ditto on the single pitch props... I've never used anything else.
there is a high and low needle valve setting on the 4-strokes... I think the 2-strokes only have a single needle valve.
The low-speed valve is adjusted by the little brass screw in the center of the throttle linkage. If your engine will idle fine and transition up to about mid-throttle fine, then just forget about this needle.
The high speed needle adjusts about like any other motor... set it for about 300 RPM richer than its fastest speed, and you'll never go wrong.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Great, thanks everyone for the advice, next step replace the prop. Any suggestions for prop size, it is on a 120 size Christen Eagle coming in at around 13 pounds.
Once again thanks to everyone.
Hey Reyn, have you striped your Waco yet?
