Gentlemen,
My 125 blows a lot of blue smoke at midrange. The top end is great, just a hint of smoke, but pull the throttle back to half or two thirds and we have a mosquito fogger.
It runs flawless tho even at midrange.
Low end, it doesnt smoke near as bad. Idles fine. maybe a bit rough, but fine.
15x8 MA prop and it turns 8750.
tell me what i havent done yet.

Low Speed needle too rich, it controls about 85% of the throttles range. Set HS needle at absolute peak and then set, (lean) LS needle a little at a time checking the transition about every other change. After achieving best idle and transiton set HS needle to your usual setting and go fly.
PS, it will hesitate a little when opening the throttle when approaching too lean on the LS needle, re-richen about 1/8th turn.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I almost picked up a saito .82 with the newcase for 222$ from advantages sale they had last month...
I purchased a saito 1.25 instead for 300$. I figure I can use one of my .91 4-stroke magnums eventhought a little hevier...
I could alway place the 1.25 instead
What prop would work well in the 1.25 in a QQ 69" yak 54?
I had heard 17x6 wide APC or a wood 17X6 ? as it is too heavy?
I might be off on the lengths...
I am going away from the APC props when I get any bigger than 15 inches...
If I can help it anyway....
Could anyone suggest a good prop for the saito FG36 on a biplane?
and a saito 325 5-cyl on a sleek biplane??
I went a little bannas during the sale....except for the FG36...picked that up in the classifieds...
I haven't had a saito in 5-years...It was a FS65...heavy as a 1.20 but powerless as a .40 2-stroke...
That engine never developed the power it should have, and never wanted to idle well at all....
I purchased it new, and broke it in on a stand...I can't remember what it ran like when new...
I picked up a ring, and a upgraded carb kit...didn't seem to help..
I checked the thickness of the old ring to the new, and there wasn't any difference...GO figure...
I had enough of 4-strokes after that for sometime....I am giving it another go at it...
Thanks guys....

As good as they are the 82 is not enough engine for your yak attack.
Been reading the instruction manual re break in for the 182 and it contradicts itself re needle settings for above break-in between the manual start by hand and the electric starter method,is either right?and how do you quickly lean it off on the third tank full for 30 seconds or so..easy way?
ps is anyome running a 115 in the 65" decathlon i'm building a better one and want to try it.

It would have gone in my Great planes Reactor .70 size...but a .91 4-stroke will work just as well... may have to add tail weight though...?HMM

I did as Hobbsy suggested. Leaned the low side to the point it wouldnt idle at all. Still getting the thick smoke at midrange.
Can lean the LS needle while running midrange and the smoke goes away like it should. But will not run at low speed or idle.
So i set it back like it was. There has to be a reason for this.
I wonder what kind of fluid circuit it has for lowspeed. Something is stopped up, and the overly rich state is making up for it.
None of my other saito's ever acted like this. All run flawless. Even the old .80.
BTW, it loved the 16x6 prop......only it was out of balance and unbalancable.
RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
When the battery pack is over the tailwheel to balance the cg they handle well on the ground in windy conditions(decathlon or any other taildragger)good luck with it

Please keep us posted charlie.Just ran a 125 in for a mate who will put it in his new h9 taylorcraft and i've seen a vid on you tube of the same plane/engine combo and that was pouring blue smoke on throttle up but seemed to perform ok.ps i hav'nt leaned the 125 off yet, will do that when we fly it.

Charlie, here is a shot of the "catseye" slot in the spraybar, the sleeve you see is the LowSpeed "needle", when you lean it too far it basically shuts off the fuel and renders the HS needle ineffective. So, if anyones HS needle becomes vague and there is little response to changes, a too lean LS needle could be the reason.
RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
A question for you fellow saito junkies. I have an fa-80 in a 4star 60 that runs very well on the bench and in the air, but if the idle is set at a reasonable speed, on landing approach it often stalls after a brief period of idling. If the idle is set a bit high it stays running but makes it difficult to get this already floaty bird 'woahed' down for landing. It has about 25 flights on it, and has a os type f plug, valves are kept adjusted. HS needle is -300 rich, LS speed needle is just fat (rich) enough to give smooth throttle transition. Prop is 13x6 mas. One thing i've noticed is the throttle shaft/barrel has what seems to me an excessive amount of end play. (i'm guessing about .015"-.020") Being that the LS needle is threaded into it, wouldn't that cause mixture fluctuation? (the idle speed screw is backed out only far enough to allow full closure of throttle). Okay, so my question is, is this endplay on the throttle shaft normal? Also, are onboard glow drivers neccesary ?
thanks in advance & sorry so long winded. -rep

You may be missing the spring from behind the throttle barrel
It is the fat spring http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products...ProdID=SAI7290

Well Bob, you're just like me then, the people who operated ahead of the curve always made more money than I did. But, they had far more headaches.[8D]
RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
w8ye-The spring is in there, you can feel the spring tension & it pops back out when you push on it, I was just concerned that it had that amt of endplay & wanted to know if this was normal, or do i need to replace the carb.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hi everyone. I have been using a 15X6 and a 14X8 prop on my saito 1.0 with a turbo header muffler, works great. I am looking at a plane that is built more for speed what is the smallest prop that I can put on this thing. Also what is the max RPM you would run this engine on the ground, I know the 82 was about 10k some tell me on the 1.00 don't go over where I am at?? I currently sit around 9200 - 9500 with the above set up. Thanks

Hey Slats!,
If you want max speed out of your 100, try a 13x11 you should get high 8k or even low 9k. Even better if you run %30 nitro.... And ~100-200 more RPMif you ditch the silencer and just leave the header pipe out.I run Perry VP-20's and don't rely on silencer pressure, though. With that setup and adecent plane you can expect over 100mph...

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Kind of a dumb question but will I see an increase in performance if I mount a Saito 1.00 sideways instead of upside down?? It runs good inverted, just wondering if there is a difference on the side. Thanks
