CARF Rebel MAX - Build Thread
#152
Very nice! @Vespino67, please tell me a little about your "fill system". Since the Digitech comes with a 4mm fill line, did you just use a 4mm manual valve and if so, please tell me what you used to build the "stopper" on the end. It almost looks like you maybe used a small socket head bolt and then, did you take a piece of 4mm fuel line and stick over it to push into the festo fitting?

vespino67 is this right? This is without fuel or smoke fluid? With such a beautiful and clean install, I'm shocked. Is your Max newer or older? I'm trying to understand how you came out 4kg (8.8 lbs) more than I did. By no means am I bragging but your weight makes me question mine as I did not try to build light per se.

This amazing plane has it's maiden flight done. Here's the video. Apologies for the focus issues. My son was filming with a new phone which, apparently, doesn't focus well in zoom.

and then, on flight #2.....
Please read the description and watch the video all the way through. I am beyond pleased with the customer support from Dirk at Pacific RC Jets and Barry/Kingtech.

Scott thanks for posting this video. Great recovery from the shotgun sound of the turbine to a very great landing under the circumstances. I didn't know if you would post the video but it's very educational to see the damage from the turbine blade explosion. Very good the turbine sale guys stepped up for emplacement and repair of the plane damage.

It was pretty amazing to be honest. The AMP connector is exactly in the area that the turbine exhaust is. If that had of been shredded, I would have nothing but splinters left. When I took out the turbine, there was ONE wire that got ripped out and it was the negative wire on the rudder servo. That explains why I couldn't yaw over to the runway on touchdown completely. Truly blessed to save this awesome airplane.

Here's a few pictures of the turbine after I removed it from the jet. We aren't positive what happened yet as I am in the process of shipping it back to Kingtech. The reason I'm posting these is so that we can all learn what can happen, regardless of manufacturer. install, whatever. Again, Kingtech is more than stepping up. I've been told by many, many people that they have never seen any turbine do this or look like this. I am passing no judgement at this point.

I'm in awe at the damage to the turbine disc breaking in half and sending shrapnel from the vanes and taking out the station turbine vanes. OMG.......Like a grenade blew up !
As you noted the rudder servo wire for the tail was damaged, it was very lucky it wasn't served the two elevators or you would have a bag of composites to sift through for the cause.
Speaking for me, Kingtech should be glad at containment of damage or they would be buying a whole $20000 jet, just very scary they have produced and shipped out the door a engine with a problematic component in their Turbine.
There is a nondestructive spray that would have found the cracks before this issue would have been raised. Easy to do and would add $20 more to the cost of the engine.

I think what's also important here is how grateful I am that this didn't happen on the ground. Y'all know how it is when all your buddies come and surround your airplane to watch the start up process. Imagine if that were the case on this one. Keep people in front of the turbine as much as you can. We must think about the possibilities, not the probabilities.
