I agree. I was flying my 220 and it was running great. Then it just quit in mid flight and I had to dead stick it in. Thought maybe it needed some adjustment, but when I tried to start it again the prop just spun freely. I took the engine apart and found I had lost 4 teeth on the cam gear???? My 220 has been sittting on the bench for two months cause I can't find a gear anywhere!!

I broke a cam gear and even a tooth off the crankshaft as well.
How in the hell did that happen?
Upon disassembly, everything was nice and wet with lubricant. Dang. 70 dollars of damage and I have no idea why.

You are lucky you didn't break a groove off your crankshaft, like I did.
My engine was running fine. I must have broke it some other time.

Mike,
The prop nut was not loose. The prop was turning free because when the cam gear quit turning the exaust valve was sitting in the open position. I didn't realize it until I took off the valve cover and discovered the valves weren't moving.

MJ, a Tee pin will do the job getting the old O-ring out, carefully herding the new one through the hole will get the new one in there. You may have to carefully move it around a little with the Tee Pin to get the new one to seat.
RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hello Saito-ites!
I would like to join the Club. So far, I have read every posting up until #7226 - page 290. It has taken me several weeks. Also, I was sad to see the passing (way back) of Bill Robison - what a Saito-guru!
I currently own two ships with Saitos installed. One ship is a Hangar 9 Fokker D-VII with an FA-82B and the other is a Great Planes RV-4 that has an FA-100 in the nose. Both engines are running fine - Ilove 'em!
In addition to joining, I have a question concerning an upcoming purchase - (my birthday is in Nov. & x-mas is right after that... so, some gift certificates may be forthcoming). =(8^]
My plan is to get a Great Planes PT-17 military Stearman and install either a Saito 170R3 or an FA-200R3. The GP Stearman specs say that the weight should be about 14-15 lbs. and the prescribed engine is up to a 1.20 cu in 4-stroke single.
> Question #1. Would the 200 radial be too much for this ship? It is only 4 oz heavier than the 170 and the GP PT-17 manual indicates a need for weight in the nose.
> Question #2. Does a Saito radial need any kind of fuel distribution add-on to keep the upper cylinder from running too lean while the lower cylinders may be too rich? If so, what would you members prescribe?
Thanks for any help you might be able to give!

I wouldn't worry about the engine size or weight, but can't help with the fuel question...I fly a FA-130T on my 1/5 scale cub that most guys use .72-.90 engines on and it does just fine with the added weight and power, actually I think it flys nice than it did with my FA-91S on it...
RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I have the Great Planes Super Stearman with the Saito 170R3 in it and it is great. Been flying for about a year and you can see progress and some tips from me and other on the Super Stearman posts. The Keleo muffler makes it sound awesome and keeps most of the oil off the aircraft. The gas tank centers to the engine so fuel flow seems to be okay even in rocket mode.

Hi all:
I have a Satio 180 GK that was in my DP Ultimate. Unfortunately, the plane did not survive a left wingtip stall from about 25 feet up. The plane came in at about 70 degrees and broke the prop and folded the wings. As a result, I'm wondering what the acceptable run out is on the crankshaft. I have mine on a dial indicator and I'm indicating 5 thousandths of an inch run out. What is the acceptable amount that is still within tolerance? Thanks!

I had a 125 with a a run out like you mention and I showed it to the owner. We went and ran the engine on a test stand last Christmas eve and we could not feel any abnormal vibration difference from any otherSaito this size and to view the blade tracking of the prop it was right on. So we forgot about the run out.
Maybe you should mount yours up and see how it runs?

Same for your number request. Post it as a standalone post, and please do not yell, that does not work well.
You do not hear from the moderators on your number, you have to read the postings and look for it.
Regards, Richard

I'm the one that made it Bold underlined, so it would be seen, as it was more or less originally embedded in another subject.

The first time the poster mentioned that he wanted to join the club, the statement was tacked onto the end of another subject.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I only own a single saito at the moment, but seeing as I will almost certainly always have one do I qualify to join as well...I almost bought an OS 120 twin but am glad I replaced my saito with another saito...my FA130T may be old as dirt, heavy, and by todays standards underpowered but man is this thing cool on my CUB in flight...

Thanks guys, nice to belong officially. BTB electric models burn better than gas powered ones so I have found out, don't ask it was a very short very expensive days testing and the final cost still has to be added up.

Any of you gentlemen ever tried an APC 13x9 on a Saito .82? Or maybe a 12x9?

Hi all..... I am in the process of changing the bearings in a FA 82 a and noticed that the conrod looks not to be bronze bushed !! or actually looks like the bronze has been worn away on the top side of the crank end. does anyone know if this is suppose to be bronze or not ???
