ORIGINAL: XJET

I'm pretty sure it's not the thrust angle -- it's 100% stock at the back and when I "punch" the throttle at low speed it briefly responds by pitching down slightly before then pitching up sharply. It looks as if the thrustline tries to push the nose down but then something else takes over and the nose pitches up very strongly.

Still a ball to fly though -- just requires a lot more attention to the sticks than other people's bobcats seem to.

[/quote]

My guess would be the lifting airfoil design of the the stab that is causing this condition. A few people have posted with this problem while most don't have the condition at all. It's possible that the stab incidence is slightly more positive or negative on some models which at higher speeds (and more prop blast) the tail is getting pushed up or down. Just a theory.

Just got my Bobcat 50. I plan to put a Rossi 60 in it. This is my first prop jet. Suggestions on prop? I thought probably 11x6, 11x8 ???

I have gone to a webra 75 on the bobcat and I have got the speed I was looking for......Running a 11/7 apc... The heli motor is the perfect combo for me.....It can handle the extra heat and still give me great rpm.....16000 on the ground.....So far with 6 flights it's been trouble free and a great screamer in the air....Speeds well over a 100mph....Flights last about 8 minutes on 12oz of 15% heli coolpower.....And yes that's a 91 OS muffler bolted on the webra....Mark[8D]

Depends if you fly from a noise sensitive site. I have a Jen 57 with 11x7 prop at 92db. I need to get down to 80db to fly it.

I don't understand your reasoning. $229 for the exact same kit you can buy from [link=http://www.nitroplanes.com/bobcatjets.html]nitroplanes.com[/link] for $129. Please explain why you bought from that seller?

Blessings, Terry

Could it be that $229 is the price in New Zealand Dollars...

Hi All,
Well, my Bobcat is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow. I have a new OS 55AX to use for power, and I'd like to use mechanical retracts - just because I have some here. Can anyone show me pix or a build thread for using mechanicals?

Thanks - great HUGE thread,
Mark T.

Don't waste money getting it through TradeMe, buy it direct from TopRC, on special right now for $160. What a bargain!

http://www.toprc.co.nz/

supplementary:

I just read the posting where you say you bought it for $229, I bet you're bummed eh?

Ask the seller if you can have it at the "special" price of $159, it's TopRC that's selling them on TradeMe so hopefully they'[ll honor that price.

I suppose you can build in some boxes to install the servos that would be needed to go mechanical but it would require two additional servos because you would need one for each wheel. Air retracts just make a lot more sense in this model. It already takes 9 servos. 2 aileron, 2 elevator, two rudder, 1 throttle, 1 nose wheel steering and one to activate the retracts valve. Also, with the swept back wing, only the very front section of the wing is accessible from inside the fuse once the fuel tank is installed. Really no way to install linkage for the retracts from inside the fuse.

My $.02

The Robart Spingdown servos fit the retract ready .50 sized very well.

The "Medium" air tank is a better fit that the small one usually provided in the retract kits.

YEA!!!! It's here!

I just opened the box, and I can see the cutouts for the retracts, but I need to remove the covering to get a good look inside.

OK, I DO NOT want to get mechanicals - too much of a PITA. So...which air retracts do you all recommend? Where's the good deals?

Also - has anyone found a CLEAR canopy? I can't stand the tinted ORANGE canopy for a white, red, and blue plane...it's just not right.

Thanks - I will order my retracts as soon as you guys chime in and tell me which EXACT model numbers to get. I was just at the Tower Hobbies site, and there's so many choices from Robart, for example.

Cya!

Is this the set I need?
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXJZE4&P=0

I think I can go with firewall or rail mount...looks like they are setup to handle both.

BTW, the cutout on the fiberglass is beautiful! This plane also came with plastic wheel-wells for all 3 fixtures. Nice.

I'm surprised at how large this plane is...I hope the OS55AX will push it over 100mph...

I picked up the Bobcat and did most of the common mods most people did on this thread. Like many others mine came in tail heavy. Instead of adding dead weight I put a brake on the front wheel. The goal was to do it for little to no money. Total cost was $8.00. I should mention that I won the servo at a club meeting but other than that $8.00 which includes changing the weak stock wire. The reason for the brake was that my flying field has short runways so if you don't hit the runway perfectly you usually run off. With this plane that means a grassy mess on the bottom of the plane. Here are some pictures. Works like a charm.

Guys the retracts you want are The Robart 520w1 NOT the 521W1 !! You need the rail mount. BTW..I put the 11x8 Graupner on mine and performance is better.Fast and very smooth.
As far as the minis go Im running the Hitec 225's on the rudders and the 225MG's on the elevator.
To answer the above question if it needs rudders??? Well woman dont need big hooters, but it makes it better right ?? You will need them for 4 points ,slow rolls etc. My Bobcat looks cool on a full throttle SLOOOOOWWW roll across the field. Just my opinion but well worth the additinal work for the rudders!!!

Hi OpJose -- Thanks!

Unfortunately Tower and Omni both have them on order...not in stock. Do you know anywhere else I can get them from (today)?

Ayrtonsenna: I started "building" a bit last night. I put in both servos in the wings, along with extensions. What was VERY interesting, is that I removed the covering from the retracts area - the sheeting was not glued on well at all...so I ran thick CA along all the joints I could reach, especially around the gear blocks. I think all the hardwood stuff was glued in pretty well from what I could tell....

Also - if you look in the top hole on the wing root, you'll see that they included a thread (string) so you can easily route the wires....yeah, right! I was not able to find the other end anyway near the servo or the retract openings! Here's what I did - and it was amazing at how fast I got this done. Use some kite string....4' of it....tie a small bolt or nut to the end to act as a weight. There's a hole that you can't easily see to the top of the servo bay....feed it through there, then stand the wing up and jiggle it until the bolt makes it's way through...for me, it came out the other side in seconds! I was very happy, as I was about to start cutting off covering to route air hoses and wires!

With the exception of the orange-tinted canopy, I'm very impressed with the kit so far.

I am going to put in a standard Futaba s3004 for rudder on one side only, then couple them like ailerons on a bi-plane, and I'm also going with a HS125mg in the elevator to cut down on some of the servos.

OK, I think it's time to start building again!

So after looking all over the place for these retracts, and coming up with nothing, I guess I'll put them on backorder at Tower. I spoke to someone who also said the Robart 604HD will work perfectly, but it's a plastic casing - so I'll just wait for the ones that will last a life-time...hopefully not too long of a wait. Omni Models and Tower both carry them. If you go directly to Robart, you'll pay about $60-70 more.

We are making laser cut mounts for the 4" to 5" fans - aimed at EDF but no reason beefing them up for ICDF wont work either.
