RE: Kicking It Old School Style - Tamiya WILD ONE!
hey guys purchased 3 wild ones in the last couple of weeks i have the desease cant stop collecting them.
i want to make em fast! i hear the diff aint gonna handle much, seriosly whats the best fix for the diff??
anyone put brushless in there wild ones successfully.
is there anyone who makes a upgrade diff?maybe a aluminium diff cog and do away with the spur gears?
or even a whole gearbox/diff swap to something more upgradable?
will the frog gearbox handle brushless?
i havent drivin a wild one yet cant wait should have 1 going very soon .
thanks joe

Welcome Joe,
it's true that the gearbox can't take much more than a Sport Tuned motor for long
It's also important that the gears are shimmed correctly to mesh without too much play.
There are some conversions to re-release Frog gearboxes on the internet (and I believe one in this thread) and there is also a vintage hop-up (ball)diff made by Thorp.
But that is really expensive and I'm not sure if either of them can handle brushless abuse.
So if you really want to try brushless, I would go with a re-re Frog conversion, as the spares are cheap on eBay.
When you get close, remember to post some pics!

Wow......this is my first post on RCU and honestly, I'm hear because I'm getting into planes. Growing up, I built the original Hornet and had the Tamiya catalog and loved the Wild One but never stuck around in the hobby long enough at any given time to pick one up. So cool that it's still around. You guys are making me want to try to get a hold of one again!!

Welcome, Seahwk95!
I don't know about them still being "around" as they are not available to buy new from the stores.. but you can certainly buy them off collectors, or used ones from eBay, etc. All depends on how much $$$ you want to spend and what condition you are expecting.
But it can be done!!
Hornet, on the other hand, has been re-released. So you can get that from any hobby shops that carry Tamiya!

Thanks for the welcome LB and Dante! Yea, I looked em up on our favorite auction site after reading about them here!!! WOW! I can't believe what they are going for, but hey, it's a classic. Not knocking anybody for buying them at that price, but I didn't realize they'd become such a collector's item. Very cool. I didn't realize that about the Hornet either! Good info. Thanks!

If you just want a runner, I am sure you can get it for a decent price.. for a shelf queen, probably expect to pay $250+!
Here's a Hornet thread I started, you can check it out:

Love the pics!! They are awesome! I see that you run the modern CVA shocks on the back!! So they fit without any problem?
That means, the DF-03 TRF shocks would fit too...
