Doesn't really matter. The last engines made had the long shaft.
What they are talking about is the length of the threads out on the end of the crank

I've got a different question... regarding bearings. I was reading a magazine article on engines recently and I think I recall it mentioning that stainless bearings are better than the stock ones (won't rust, of course!) but I thought that it also made the comment about the problem being even more severe up here in the Northeast section of the country.
Any comments on that? Does anyone else remember reading something similar to that recently?

The stainless bearings are softer than standard bearings. You have to be extremely careful installing them and then careful with prop strikes etc when using the engine.
I have not had over all success running stainless bearings.
I read that too in Feb Model Aviation

Over here i've been running ngk stainless for the last two years.I used to think the standard saito bearings wer'nt up to much,or i treat my engines better nowadays.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Ok guys, nobody has to convince me of Saito engines as all of my nitro models have them but the thing I need the most is a CAD file for a Saito 56. It can be 2-D 3-D or solids. I needd it for a set of plans I designed several years ago but now a lot of my club members want to build one and I didn't put an engine in the plans since I was the one doing the building.
Please help!!!

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
HI everyone,
After you've helped Les, I could use a suggestion also.
I'm building up a Bruce Tharpe Delta Vortex. Normally, it's going to be powered with a .91 2S (don't start Boo-ing me yet ). However I also have a NIB Saito 125 that is earmarked for another project. I thought that, while I'm building that other project I might toss the 125 onto the Delta Vortex for some fun time and to break it in.
The only problem is that the Delta Vortex may not have the landing gear height to handle the 2-blade props that the Saito 125 needs to use. So, my question is whether any of you have ever put a 3-bladed prop on the 125, and if so, which one? I want to treat the engine nice and easy but I don't want to put on such a light prop that it will over-rev.
Any suggestions??? And to go along with Les's question, does anyone have a source of Saito drawings that we could use for our designs?
Thanks,
Bob

Bob/Les,
I may have an older CAD type of drawing. I'll do a search. I seem to remember something.
That would be a great model for the 125.

Bob, either this one or the 14x7, they are prebalanced so be careful enlarging the hole.

Hi les i was waiting to see if someone was going to ask you why you need them, the measurements you need are freely available.

I see the FG-20 is the same price as the Saito 125 now.
The FG-17 cost 100 dollars more.
Just a random sale? or are they moving the FG-20 out the door as fast as they can for some reason?
I have to admit, I've heard more negative feedback about the FG-20 than any other Saito ever produced.
I'd still love to have one.....

Guys,
i am looking forward to buying my next Saito, an FA-220.
If someone has one....: [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/market/item.cfm?itemID=823133]Saito FA-220A[/link]

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
i have a pacific aero .40 size edge 540.
flew with os 70FS, a bit of a dog so i put a os 91FS pumped on it. required a fast landing approach. but flew real strong.
ive installed a saito 82.
the only way to fit it in the cowl is inverted.
looks like the needle bar is about 1" below center of fuel tank. is that close enough?
the other issue i have is the exhaust.
OS uses a thread into the end of the muffler, saito into the side.
if i could get a short nipple exhaust pipe i could keep the muffler closer to the head and straight down thru the bottom of the cowling.
or just as well - saito has a right angle exhaust pipe. is it possible to fit an os muffler on the saito, i would have to re-tap the threads to match the larger saito threads. my os 70FS has a smaller diameter thread than saito 82.
any ideas?
whats a good prop for that aircraft/saito .82? APC 13x8, 14x6? or other?
jon

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
OS and Saito muffler thread sizes are different
Use 14 X 6 on the 82
You can get a straight all threaded exhaust nipple for the Saito 82

I started out my R/C experience W/an FA 150 on a Sr Telemaster, hence my username.
I still have that FA 150 fired by C&H electronic ignition, another NIB FA 150, an FA 180 that has never been started mounted on a ¼ scale Cap 232, an FA 91s on a US Aircore 40 size high wing and last but not least, a 300 TTDP W/C&M spark ignition that is to be mounted on my framed up 1/3 scale SIG Spacewalker.
I have never owned a 2 stroke R/C engine & don't plan on it.
i do wish Saito had more options in 5 cylinder radials as the next engine will be a radial but probably an ASP 400R5 of possibly an Evolution 777 radial.
Here are some PIX of the 300 TTDP. Note the ignition module & spark plug wires. It idles reliably @ 1100 RPM.
If you have never tried spark ignition on the larger Saito engines, you should give it a try. I don’t remember the tank size, but the FA 150 would run 12 minutes @ WOT W/glow ignition & 30 minutes @ WOT on Spark ignition on the same tank using 15% Cool Power fuel for both runs.
The idle, transition & midrange power were all much improved W/no loss of top end power.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
The os fs pumped I ran with a 14x6
Peaked in the high 9k's
If I can get even the low 9k's with the .82, with the weight savings it should be a big improvement
The rc specialties muffler will work for the muffler
Any issue with the height of the needle valve?
It's about 1inch below center of the tank
I read a post a couple pages back- set the LS needle on the lean side as much as it will tolerate to help
Is that right?

JB please let us know how you go with the 14x6 and 82 combo.I have a long serving side mounted 82 that i set the hsn on early last year and don't bother to fiddle with it.Periodical tacho readings vary from 8100 to about 8400 with a 14x6 apc and it always runs on the rich side.I have just fitted an rc specialties muffler to it this morning and will fly it later today, let you know how that goes.
Re your question about the needle being low compared the the tank height. It was a problem for me when the 82 was inverted in a 46 size decathlon in as much as with a full tank on the ground it ran very rich at idle so the lsn setting was critical, you can't lean it to much otherwise the hsn looses adjustment and you have lean runs towards the end of the tank while flying, deadsticks too.I eventually side mounted it although i thought about fitting on board glo.

It's nice for that ignition to give so many options . . . and benifits. Got a FA270T converted with a RcXel, yet to run, and hoping for a 20:1 gas mix (if can find good stock carb settings). Can always revert to glow,or even straight methanol.
