RE: Composite-Arf 2.6 Extra 330
A few more questions...
I'm having a little trouble with the rudder. I set it up per the instructions but I did cross the wires so that exit holes were closer to the rear. When I go to max throws the wire loop seems to slip a little bit on the phenolic which causes it to not center correctly. Will this wear out so that it doesn't snag or slip on the phenolic? I have the wires tight but not supper tight.
The rudder is a tight fit between the counterbalance and the top of the rudder. Should I do something to get a better fit?
Thanks,
Craig

Where do you guys install the Da ignition? I was thinking on the bottom front of the cowl. Is anyone mounting it inside the firewall?

I would not mount it there. I started to do that on mine (bottom dome) then realized it would be blocking a lot of the exit air flow. Just about anywhere else would be fine. Mine is on the side of the dome inside the cowl, no problems to date with my BME.

RTK,
That is exactly what I was thinking about. On the side is better. Thanks for the quick response. I can't wait to finish this thing. It is driving me crazy.... LOL.
Any ideas on the stock rudder phenolics? The cable is slipping a little. Should I sand the phenolic a little?

RE: Composite-Arf 2.6 Extra 330
Well,
The rudder problem has seen to wear away. It must have been a small piece snaging it and I asume it finally gave up. LOL. It weighs somewhere between 25-26 lbs according to my really inacurate scale. Is that good for a DA 100 on regular mufflers? Not finished with the graphics yet but I'm not adding too much to the top. Just enough to make it visible.
How do ya'll attach the tailwheel to the rudder? I tried using spring but it pulled down on my rudder and caused it to bind on the conterbalance/rudder post.
It is balanced at 100 mm from the leading edge at the tip. Will that be acceptable?
Thanks a bunch for ya'll help. This has been a huge learning experience. I bet the second comp arf a person builds goes together in a couple of weeks. The first one took me forever! (and I'm not kidding)

RE: Composite-Arf 2.6 Extra 330
Almost done, I saved the engine install for last and have a few questions.
Comp-Arf 2.6m w/ DA-100.
1. Do I need to charge the DA electronic ignition module? If so will my JR wall or JR field charger work?
2. I’m using two 6 volt JR 2700 NiMH for the PowerBox, what do you suggest for the DA? 4.8 or 6 volt and what mah? And what about a regulator?
3. For the DA-100, I cut nice little exit holes in the cowl and plan to shorten the mufflers and baffle the front as the manual suggests, do you for see any over heating issues. Or should I open the bottom of the cowl up more and leave the mufflers at the stock length?

RE: Composite-Arf 2.6 Extra 330
Hi Bob,
not sure I know what you mean by charge? I use a regulated 2800 mah lithion on my ignition and use about 80% in a long day of flying. If you use a nickle battery go with 4.8volts. A 1400 might do fine or larger, but you said you field charge so even an 1100 4.8volt would do ok. Make sure you wire the ignition correctly. Battery-switch-ignition and I recommend the smartfly fiber optic ignition cut off for safetly. I love mine! I baffelled my engine and am glad I did! I have almost 50 gallons through the plane and it has probably helped on the hot days out here. Cut the mufflers? Not sure what you mean but I did not cut my mufflers. I did not modify the cowl at all, just cut holes for the muffler stacks. Your gonna love this plane! It is my favorite plane!
Update on my 2.6, (short stack with syrup)!
I dumped my 2.6 out it the field in a harrior flying with one hand and the other scratching my face and yawning, it happened really quick and I laughed! Dumb dumb dumb, and dumber! Broke the whole empenage off almost. Bend stab tube and broked rudder phenolic horn. The repair was easy and I feel confident about it.
Thanks to Darcy I will have another stab tube soon and Bob Shapiro for sending me the phenolic sheet, It will be back in the air pushing the limits very very soon. This is one well made and tough plane! I am comfortable with composite materials, if this was balsa it would be in the trash! hhaha! My backup plane is an old 3.0M that I'm kicking myself for not getting ready to fly!

Joe,
I think the correct terminology for your incident is Aunt Jemima, short stack, he he. Where do you get the syrup from? Eh, harrioring with one hand, aren't we getting a little cocky here? Yes, you should get that 3.0 m in the air asap, it's leaps and bounds more stable than the little 2.6m. I am starting my 3m soon, picked up a 3W140 for $600.00 he he. When the plane is all ready to go with 6 x 5955, 3 x 5995 and throttle servo and kill switch, I'll have something like $2,500.00 in it, do you think it'll be a tosser?

Joe-
Thanks for the feedback. I ended up shorting the smoke stacks so I wouldn't have to cut up the cowl to much. Just made two clean exit holes. Sorry to hear about your 2.6m, I hope you enjoy your new 3.0m.

RE: Composite-Arf 2.6 Extra 330
Your welcome! My 2.6 is all fixed and waiting parts. The extra tail weight should be just what I have been looking for!~)>,.haha! Jens, your always fun! Yea, that 3.0 meter is gonna be fun. Are you using the power expander or match boxes? I'd like to see if I could match all the servos and not need MBs and just use a 149pcm. You like them high-tek servos? I don't hear bad about them titanium gear ones. Hmm. 3W140???? I hope that goes ok for you. I was gonna use the big zenoa twin straight stack! j/k! The 2.6 is gonna get a whippin for all the fixxin! I'll give a report after some nice blenders/walls and harrior landings!

RE: Composite-Arf 2.6 Extra 330
Plane flew awesome today. Great day for a maiden. I'm going to need a good afternoon of calm weather to get all the trim details worked out but I can tell this plane rocks! I have a really boring maiden video on my site.
www.rcvideoaddicts.com
I kind of like the maiden flight to be boring. LOL.
Thanks again for all the help this thread has givin me.

The manual suggests initially setting the CG at 90 - 100mm (3.5 - 4â€) from the leading edge at the wing tip, is this accurate?

Thanks RTK.
On my DA-100 does it matter which spark plug wire from the ignition box goes to which spark plug on the engine? (These maybe silly Q's, but I don't want to put this plane in the dirt from some silly mistake.)

I added some color. Not sure on the rest of the graphics yet...
I balanced mine at 100 mm back from the wingtip. It actually may be a bit more back than that. +- 5 mm... It flew very well with just a touch of up elevator when inverted. The tail felt a little sensitive so I just added a touch more expo...

RTK,
Thanks. I didn't wrap the stars around. I just put a white star in the middle of each red surface. Tried to keep it simple. I didn't want any straight lines for the judges to look at. LOL.

RE: Composite-Arf 2.6 Extra 330
I plan on double clanking my fuel tank. One clank for the fuel line, and one clank for the DA fuel dot so I can drain the fuel.
Question: To avoid any entanglement do have the clank for the DA fuel dot shorter, or the same length as the fuel line clank?
Bob
