question for the gurus? i have a fa125 and i finally got engine tuned. i'd be flying in 85 to 100 degree weather, yesterday, took her out to fly, and temp was 55 degrees. once i got on run way and punched it, the motor revved down, but i saved it from turning off. what would you expect needed to be done with HSN or LSN in this situation?

I would say both need richened a little but not very much, maybe 1/8th turn on the LS and 1/4 on the HS. Do the HS one first and then check the transition, if it hesitates, the LS is at fault.

my 125 did the same thing to me. the weather changed and i had to retune. I thought I had a bad glow plug. repeaked the high needle and tuned the low and she was back in the air in no time. until i broke my firewall. .40 size planes dont handle the power of the 125 well. it was the quietest thing i have ever seen for those verticle lines it produced. it was barely working to move that model around like a rocket.
RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
That's actually good news if your tuning is so close (to being lean on the bottom end) that you can tell by a change in barometric pressure. You're getting the smoothest possible idle and saving fuel! Mine are usually living on the edge like that. Also I can tell when I go to a different field that is higher or lower in altitude.

Although kind of blasphemous here on the Saito forum, I bet that OS FR5 will sound the bear when fired up!

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I posted this in a thread of it's own so it might come out better in a search.- but thought it also needed to be posted in here.
I needed to change out the bearings in my Saito .91 and wanted to find some guidance on the web. There are always people asking about vids that show a rebuild. What I found was a Power Point Presentation on rebuilding the Saito .91
Here is a link to that Presentation www.authorstream.com/Presentation/KevinKenny-259310-repairing-saito-91s-radio-control-engines-reseating-valve-91-sports-ppt-powerpoint/
I used it, along with a little bit of extra web instructions and rebuilt my .91. What I thought would be the only hard part was getting the Cam gear timming in the correct position. So following the presentation I coaxed the intake cam follower out and then made a timming tool.
Imade a timming tool using 12 gauge solid copper wire. I stripped a little insulation off the end and then filed the copper end down to a rounded point. Iadded a little heat shrink which made it just the right diamitier to fit into the cam follower guide. Pics of the timming tool and then the tool as it holds the cam (throughthe intake follower guide) in the correct position. I wanted to show how to make a simple timming tool so anyone following the Presentation can easily get the timming correct.
Igot the Saito .91 back together with new bearings, piston ring, and gaskets and got her fired up for 2 tank fulls of fuel. (About 20 mins run time). She runs like new and can't wait to take her up for a flight (Reactor 2s .60 sized Biplane).

OF OS is the "other" 4 stroke company. have you honestly never heard of this? These are the ones that Thunder tiger and ASP copy.
Edited to say, don't worry, if you only ever own Saitos, your life will still be complete, and you can die happy.

Raven, how long have you been in if the LA 40 is your first engine. Mine was the venerable FP 40.

Lately I've been flying a Minimag with a Cox .049. They're a little easier on fuel than Saito's
RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Cox .049's on a saito thread what the hell is the world coming too? they did scream at you as a kid finger flicking that small and fast prop, jeez how you could afford just the fuel to run it for ten minutes, parents and pocket money if you did all your jobs.

Talk about a night and day comparison. I could never get those little B@st@rds to run right. conversely I can't hardly make a Saito run wrong.
I will pay for that comment I think. What do you say OF? will any of my Saitos run again after that comment.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Not a Saito story, but good for a laugh anyway.
When I was around 11 or 12 my parents gave me the original COX Corsair for Christmas. My dad was as big a kid as I was and could not wait to try it out. Set everything on the stool in front of his Barcolounger with newspaper underneath to keep the fuel from staining.
Anyway, it took quite a bit of tweaking and squirts with the supplied can of fuel to get it running, but once it fired up and my dad tuned the needle that little bugger wound out and promptly sucked the newspaper through the prop, shredding it to fibers soaked in castor oil. The living room was a fog, with a good chunk heading towards the kitchen where mom was putting the finishing touches on the traditional Christmas dinner. I thought she'd kill him!
