Saito gives the operating range of the FA-82 as going up to 12K rpm, so yu could safely got to 11K on the ground with a high pitch propellor.
Engines do unload somewhat in the air, but the amount of rpm gained is in direct relationship to the actual air speed and the pitch speed. If you put a prop on with a 4" pitch the plane would easily reach the 45 mph pitch speed at 12K rpm in a dive, and any more speed that that would have you running the engine over speed. At the same time, pitch speed with a 10" pitch and 12K rpm is a little over 113 mph. I strongly doubt you'll ever get it that fast.
So, regardless of prop diameter, the plane with a 4" pitch will "Unload" the engine in the air a lot more than it will with a 10" pitch, and you can have a higher static rpm with the higher pitch and still be safe.

There needs to be a Universal Saito Disassembly Tool Kit.
I thought the next semester of the William Robison School of Model Engine Repair and Overhaul that I enrolled in I'd be issued one.
Seems I got a notice in the mail that my application had been rejected...I flunked out!

Well I finally got it I ended up trying just tapping it out and it STILL would not come out. I put it Back in the oven to cook some more.. (just love the smell of hot 4 strokes). I then taped easy and it started moving. It popped out and we are now waiting for bearings and rings. I inspected the cam really good and It seems really smooth. It was just sitting up WAY to long. The motor itself looks NEW! Great condition. Can't wait to get the new and try it again!!

Edited to include popcycle sticks at the request of others that know me. I bought a package at Walmart about 3 years ago I use them for all kinds of things in model airplanes and engine bearing replacement. I use the exacto knife to remove the shields on the rear bearings.

I also add a supply of cigarette filters. Huh??? Right. Four squeezed together make a nice plug for the exhaust port when storing the engine, a few drops of oil on/in it keeps the top end clean and dry. Also, if you paint your cylinders plug the intake as well, and one alone closes the plug hole nicely. Much easier than ordinary masking. Faster too.
If you are using your wooden dowels as assembly mandrels, then I'm doing the same except mine are various size steel rods

If your exhaust manifold and muffler don't look like a shirty dirt, you're not flying enough and spending waaaaaay too much time cleaning in the shop. Mine are the color of a baby's diaper after two days of creamed asparagus and beans.

Hi,
I'm new to the club.I have a couple of saito engines 45 & 56.The 45 is needing a bit of TLC.I'm looking at giving it a overhaul.Are there any tips for stripping,any problem area's.These engines are pleasure to own.Any advice welcome.Cheers.

On the 72 fix, Saito brought out a new back plate that has a brace under the carb mount.
Also Some had little washers under the screws.
Buy a new back plate and get some small metric washers to go under the screws.

The same new back plate is now used on the 82.
Saito must feel bad about the 72, the new ones come with a extra set of Orings.

Finally put two turns of 0.020" safety wire around the cylinder holding the intake pipe just at its entry into the carb body. Pulled it tight and twisted the ends together. The engine hasn't missed a beat since.
