Not 2.5%, I use 3% as recommended by Wren.

Mobil DTE Light is an industrial turbine oil, I guess it's a bit like a hydraulic oil.

What's worth remembering is that jet oil, or indeed DTE Light, is not designed to be burnt.
In turbines it's just circulated round & round like in your car.

Of course 2 stroke oil IS designed to be burnt.

The DTE Light is quite inexpensive. My current lot cost about $90 for 20 litres, delivered, although at a 3% mix a little oil goes a long way so the price is not a real issue.
One disadvantage is it's clear so fuel levels are a bit harder to see. - John.

G'day Tom - I'm the Alan that Steve referred to in his comments on the repair of your original Reaction. I am just about to start on the construction of the second Reaction kit that Steve got from Noel.

I note your reference to your current Reaction being 82%. What motor are you planning on installing. ? I have been holding off getting a motor myself, pending success with the Reactions, but the thought of a smaller model is attractive, and I am interested in the smaller motors that are appearing.

I am also attracted by the picture of an earlier pulse jet model, the 'Old Flame', that Bruce includes in the Manual. It appears to have been a very attractive model, and seems to have a few of the features I will be including in the third 'Reaction' - such as straight trailing edge ( to aid CG ) and more curvature in fuselage to improve appearance. I would appreciate any comments you, or others, might have on these ideas.

Hi Alan,
I reduced the reaction plans to 82%. I had the ribs laser cut by a bloke here in sydney. I am going to use a Wren 44 gold. I have the motor but have not used it yet, Just started it a few times. It is very powerful, probably as powerful as the first Wren kit 54.

The model is up in the roof at the moment because of other projects. It just needs to be covered and the gear installed. I must get on with it. I was inspired to build it by another bloke on RCU (Dave Rigotti rcguy!). He has had a small reaction for some time and says it flies great. I find the big reaction difficult to transport. I think I could get the small one in a normal car. As far as the pusejet model is concerned, I have not thought about it as a turbine model. Might be interesting. I believe this is what prompted Bruce to design the Reaction.

Regarding a more rounded Fuse, I put bigger triangle stock in the fuse and sanded the corners a lot more, deep into the triange stock. I think it will be necessary to glass the fuse after this to keep the strength.

Thanks Tom. Re rounding the fuselage, I agree that bigger triangular stock is the easiest - and that is what Steve has in mind ( from your comments) but I have long been a fan of the late Ralph Brooks ( a former two time W/C aerobatic champ) and his 'Crusader' design - We built and flew a lot of these in SRCS incidently - and the Kato kit of this model ( unauthorised ) made use of molded balsa in the fuselage. I think this could be time to investigate this construction technique again Very strong and light. I was quite surprised to feel the weight of the Reaction. Darn near gives me a hernia lifting it LOL I know the jets handle the weight ok, but the Reaction style is best suited to the lightest weight achievable.

Reactions seem to fly better with a bit of weight. I know my Red and White Supersport Reaction lands much better than the yellow and blue one. It does not float as much. It weighs just over 20 pounds. All of the Composite Reactions are much heavier and all seem to fly OK.

I remember Ralph Brooks. I built a crusader a long time ago. I could not fly the pattern but liked the model. I have most of the RCM magazines. I must look it up.

Hi John,
Thanks for the info on the oil. Yes you are correct about the oil in turbines - it does circulate within the engine to lubricate bearings & gearboxes etc & is not burnt. The other thing is that depending on the turbine size e.g.PT6 size turbine the components are only rotating at approx 50,000 RPM nothing like the RPM that model size turbine bearings are subjected to. I have always had difficulty coming to terms with the use of turbine oil in our application. I guess it works OK.

Many years ago Alan & I used JET OIL2 as an additive to fuel for 4 strokes - this did work well & was a substitute for nitro. Probably in hindsight this was not the wisest of moves.

Hi Tom,

The sanding is finished & the fuselage is now undercoated with grey primer & it has had a sanding as well. Unfortunately I can't do anything on it this week as I have to travel to Perth tomorrow, back Friday for work. Providing Saturday is a good day weather wise I should be able to put some colour on the fuselage.

The sanding sealer worked well & only 2 coats were required with sanding after each coat to fill the weave of the glass. It was easy to sand & quite easy to get a good finish on the surface. I have been using a foam sanding block with medium/fine paper on it. For a start I use the medium to knock the ripples left from brushing down & to roughly get an even surface. After I am satisfied with the "flatness' I use the fine side to produce a smooth surface removing the fine scratches from the medium paper.

I took the sample piece of balsa to the flying field today to show some of the guys & they were suitably impressed with the finished results.

Nice looking Reaction!

Dave R is right .. Ihave an F-15 in arctic aggressor camo, and it's hard to see depending on the sky conditions. Or, as one of my (former military pilot)spotters said ..laughing loudly .. yes, Dave, Camo paint schemes AREhard to see .. ha ha ha ha....

Igot all the graphics for my "F9F Panther-like" R54 scheme from Jerry Caudle at ProMark Graphics .. his stuff is epoxy paint transfer, very very nice .. Iam sure he can hook you up!

Looks great!!! The good suggestions about contrasting graphics will help you see it in flat light, and it's also going to stick out very well on sunny blue sky days by itself. I love camoflauge and have several jets in various schemes. What helps me is a ID stripe somewhere, either Yellow or Red. Depending on your vision, one will pop more than the other, you probably already know what you see best, color wise.

It looks good, but be careful with those colors... I'd at least darken the 'canopy' to give yourself a fighting chance with left or right banked orientation.

No worries. I've spent some of the best times of my life in NZ!! Amazing place, one of the jewells of planet Earth in my opinion. One question however - how can you have the nicest people in the world, yet when placed behind the wheel of an automobile or motorcycle, you all morph into psychopaths?!?!?

For our 'overseas friends, the 'long white cloud' Tom refers to is the vapour trails of the jets full of Kiwi's flying to Aussie land,  AKA 'the third island'.

Re the Pneumonic Plague, I had never heard that - but I guess you did what I did and googled Maryborough. Seems like that is Maryborough's main claim to fame  LOL  particularly liked the entry  which listed it as our main attraction,  haha .  Actually, the main attraction is quickly becoming our model flying field and jet models  - we already have 5 jet modellers ( two of whom fly Reactions ),  not bad for a club with some 90 members in a population of about 25,000.

Once again, for our overseas members, Aussie's and Kiwi's love to take the Micky out of each other.

I know this is off topic (Not Jet related), but I am in the US at the moment. i came over here to fly in the Collings Foundation B17.

I went to my friends place in Monterey CA and he flew us in his Beech Bonanza to the Concord CA airport where the Collings aircraft were.
when i got there the B17 flight was full. As I could not be there the next day, I had to fly in their dual control P51. of course I was very disapointed (Grin). I had the best time of my life. I was allowed to fly it and did two rolls and many tight turns. The pilot flew along the strip at about 300 Knots and then into a vertical roll. It was much better than my Mig29 flight although not as fast.
If any of you guys in the US ever get the chance to visit the collings display I fully recommend you do it.
One more thing to cross of my "Bucket List"
