Some friends and I have been kickin around a C-130 project to use at airshows. Drop a bunch of paratroopers, some cargo, do a low drag chute cargo drop on the runway with hummer on it and have it drive away. Also looking at doing RATO takeoff like fat albert demonstrates. We are looking at using 4 ryobi gas coversions with about the same carrying capacity as what you're looking at. Thats why I was curious about your engine size. We are just at the talking about it stage and havent even decided if we want to actually go thru with it yet.

Thought of doing same with RATO (D rocket motors). Going with Slurry tank for air drop (1 Gallon).....still flight testing. Would like to see thoughts on RATO.

Is the idea of my project
In November I am going to fly it for the first time, and there we will know how it flies with those engines...
I know of a similar model with 55 lb. /25 kg of weight and 4 O.S. 60. The model flies, but it only flies. Does not reach to take extra weight.

A friend of mine and I used 3 C size (rocket) jatos to help lift a piggy backed Space shuttle. He fired them remotely via the retract switchafter the engine throttle was full and the aircraft was on TO roll . The rocket motors were a booster and normal engines. The carring plane was a 40 sized Telemaster that just was a smidge underpowered with the shuttle on it. The rockets sure put the kick in it's butt though. The carrier pilot was rryman who flys a C-130 model now, and posts here in the twin section a lot. He has a few threads under the other C130 posts. It was a hoot to fly the shuttle back as it a was just like the real one, afast glide back to the runway. We havae videos of it and at some points its really hard to tell if its a model shuttle of the real thing.

I love Herky Birds and these plans sound great! I was an Air Force Flight Nurse and trained on those and C-141B's. The cargo drop you're talking about is called LAPES (lap-ess) and means Low Altitude Parachute Extraction System. That would really be something to demo at a fly-in! A little known similar system was also designed for the C-141, but it was for air-launching a Minuteman ICBM; the missile was loaded so that when the rear ramp was lowered and the extraction chute was deployed, it would drag the missile out butt-first and as it dropped, with the drogue holding the nose up, the rocket motor would fire. The system was canned when treaties were signed probibiting mobile launchers. Would anyone care to tackle modeling that?!
Another C-130 to model would be the AC-130 Gunship (Spectre) Twin 20mm Gatling guns, a 70mm Bofors twin barrel gun and a 105mm Howitzer, all firing out the left side of the plane. That would be sure to keep the spectators' heads down!

Look at the pther threads for the C-130's rryman has one modeled after the Spectra. Its a really beautful model. in the air and on the ground.

Beplo did you scratch build that fuse are is it an available Kit/ARF? If so who has it? I have the quality fiberglass version but would have a larger one. Thanks

It is a mold of homemade manufacture. it is not a kit. I bought the plane of palmer and I modified it on scale 1:10 (previous authorization of Palmer) Then I made reinforcements of structure according to the size. First I did a molde of the fuselage with foam, Then it was covered of fiber glass, and finally the mold of foam was removed and now the interior is empty.

Just figured I'd use a servo to light the rocket motors.
We thought a hummer with a .50 cal on it would be neat. Have a soldier and the gun pop up, use the land transmitter to unlock the clamps and have the hummer drive off doing the rata-tat-tat. Would have to clear the runway pretty quick though.

Hummer coming off during "hot landing".....guns ablazing....that would be VERY cool!! (Have an R/C MD 500 provide air support?? Create quite a show).
I thought about setting up with fire jumpers coming out the back of mine (rear door is powered by a pnematic cylinder), but still in process of learning how to fly this monster (4 flights.....83 oz wing loading.....take off and landings a real struggle).

One thing to consider regarding sliding something out the back of your -130 model is massive rearward c/g shift during the time it takes to offload the Humvee. When you consider the weight of a full-scale 130 and fullscale Humvee, the ratio is much greater than it would be on a model, and therefore would be much more critical on the model. It would probably initiate an uncommanded pitch-up on the aircraft, and since you are at low altitude and probably a reduced airspeed, would possibly spell S-T-A-L-L, unless you have a big surplus of power and a lot of tail surface authority. The faster the off-load the better.
