Need Advice on 50cc Engine Pick!
Hi
I recently bought a Midwest Extra 300XS Kit.
I dont know which engine should i put in it.
Either a Brison 3.2 or DA-50... Or any other recomindations???
I would want to be able to do 3D on it and need some advice.
Appreciate the help!

Between Brison and DA, I say Brison. A little bit heavier (a couple or 4 oz) but tons more reliable and just as much power. In fact from what Ive seen, the Brisson has been 1-200 RPM stronger than the DA on the same prop. Plus its 150 bucks cheaper. They are currently not in business, but that should keep you from finding a brand new one here on RCU. If you want to know my overall pick, it would be the MVVS 45. more power than both of the others with a cannister, plus it is lighter and quieter than the others with stock mufflers. It cost as much as a DA but it is well worth it. But if you are limited to the 2 you listed, the Brison is the way to go.

Which would be best for 3D???
Anyone has this Extra 300XS? How does it track? Will i be able to do 3D and IMAC?
I was thinking about a smoky system... is it good for this kind of plane?
Thanks.

NO disrespect to either Brison or Taurus but Dave Johnson and the boys from DA have earned my money based on their service ethics alone. you will simply not find a more customer oriented business anywhere...they are the benchmark. While I do not currently own a DA50 I do own a couple of their 150s and a 100.........the DA50 would be my choice.

I'll pipe in as I currently fly both DA's and Brisons... Both are good engines and will do the job... The Brison is a little cheaper, but hearing they are no longer in business makes me a little nervous... I have no experience with the Taurus so I cannot offer an opinion...
For my money, a DA50 with a Mesjlik or NX 23X8 is the best choice for a 3D airplane in the 14 - 18 lb range...
Let's not digress into a Ford vs Chevy argument... It's a subjective questions and all we can do is offer opinions and anecdotal experience... Bottom line, it's whichever engine gives you a woody when you roll up on the throttle...

RE: Need Advice on 50cc Engine Pick!
Basically the DA is a different animal. Most of the 50cc engines are based on a Sachs design. This includes Brison and the Taurus and FPE. Even the BME is based off an Echo design. DA is from the ground up an original engine. The chainsaw based engines are gonna have torque and HP at different RPM than the DA. That said, there is only so much power to be had from a 50CC engine, regardless of how it is timed and ported. I would almost guarantee that if you bolted the same muffler up to any of the newer 50cc engines (DA, BME, 3W, Brison, Taurus, FPE, and the MVVS 45) that they would all be within a few hundered RPM. And most of them are within about 3-8 oz of each other. The DA is a little lighter than most of the others, and it has a little more power. It also cost more, and has been the cause of many more problems than the others. Any of the chainsaw based engines will be nearly bulletproof, unless you do something stupid. When DA finally gets all the bugs worked out, it will be a bulletproof engine. Here is my opinion, if you are gonna be 17-19 pounds, I would get the DA on a pipe, or a MVVS 58 with a stock DA muffler. Both will be within a few ounces, and have similar HP, with the edge going to the MVVS 58. The advantage of the 58 is you can actually put it on a 22+lbs. plane with the MVVS pipe and and have power for 3D. If the plane will be below 17 pounds, I would chose either the Brison, the oh so loved Taurus, or the FPE all on a stock type muffler. Either one of those 3, or you could go for more power and weigh less than all of them and get the previously mentioned MVVS 45 MG/MVVS pipe. But to sum everything up, lable a quarter one side DA and the other Brison and flip that sucker.

I have a Brison 2.4 and 5.8. Both rock solid reliable engines. Their value is excellent as well. For the MW Extra, try to stay as light as possible and you'll have a great plane. One of mine had a Moki 2.10 in it. Got tired of feeding it and pulled it out. Of course I'm jumping from the pan into the fire as I'm going to put in a Tartan Twin on ignition but still run FAI fuel. My other MW Extra will get a 50cc class engine at some point.

50cc engines.... how to choose?
#1 suggestion - Buy one that is "in stock". Sounds stupid, but before you decide, shop around and find out who **HAS** the motor you're thinking about.
#2 suggestion - Buy one that has AT LEAST "been around" for a couple years, if you want reliability and service.
#3 suggestion - Read all the crap on RCU on every 50cc motor, then go flip a coin based on the results of Suggestion #1.
I have had several breeds of 50cc motors. They all ran. They weigh relatively-the-same. They burn gas, and use oil. They turn propellors, of varying sizes, shapes, weights, and ALL - repeat ALL - at different RPM.
Get what floats your boat, suits your fancy, has some other local guys around you to help answer questions, and one that you just "like".
As heretical as it is - I really **** LIKE **** my Brison, BME, and Taurus motors. I'd bet just about anything that I'd like the DA, if I had one, maybe even the ZDZ, or perhaps an MVVS. But I can find AT LEAST half a dozen people on these forums who would SWEAR that EVERY BRAND LISTED "sucked"..... depending on which half-a-dozen I asked.....

DA all the way.Granted the 50 had problems but they have been fixed as no one in the industry stands behind there product better then them. With all the new mods they are holding up and run great. For service alone they are my choice.

Aerobob you hit the nail right on the head. Listen to him, follow his suggestion and everything will be great, even if you do end up with a DA.

RE: Need Advice on 50cc Engine Pick!
Hi,
I have been very happy with my 3W-50. Well, all 14 of them. I have run them harder than most hobby modelers and they just run and run. They never have had cooling problems like one particular make or connecting rod problems that needed to be fixed like another brand. Some people complain that they are heavy. Perhaps 10 ozs heavier than that brand with the connecting rod failures. However, I am pleased with the engine, its power, its reliability and its ruggedness.
Happy turkey day
