TRX 2.5 are garbage
Hey.
Has anybody else had this problem? After 2.5 gallons, my trx 2.5 in my tmaxx runs for like 2 minutes maximum and then shuts off. sometimes i it drives literally 10 seconds and dies. This is alll after setting everything abck to factory settings. Its shuts off when i let go of the throttle when it dies in like 10 seconds. Usually it lasts about 3 minutes then gets smoke from the cooling head and if i don't keep on the throttle it dies. It is very frusttrating because it is my first nitro and i wan to run it but i can't get through 1 tank without it dying 5 times. Any suggestions? Mybe an airleak?
Thanks

I would go buy a temp gun and and then try to tune it it make life much better when it comes to tuning. I cant say its a airleak because i dont know what the temps are. If it was running 170 200 then no airleak, but if it is running like 300 then airleak.

What's the history of the care on ur 2.5? I know when I first got my max it did the same thing . The motor had lost compression so it would run get nice and hot then die. We also had a problem with our new motors dying after we hit the throttle . I had to lean out the Lsn to get rolling

yes lots of people have that problem
and 90% of them
don't have a clue
on proper break-in,
proper tuning or
care of a nitro engine

Also , the first prolly 1.75 gallons, i never touched the needles, so it wasn' too lean. It just started happening for the last 1/2 gallon i have been running.
If it came down to a trashed engine, is the 3.3 a good engine to get since i can do the traxxas ERP?

Just
ignore

[I hate he types like that]
Anyway, yes the TRX 3.3 is a great engine but first we need to cover your bases with this one so u don't trash another. Have u tryed richening the LSN? Or the HSN?

First of all i did break it in exactly how traxxas said to. I clean the engine and oil it every time i run it even if it is like 10 minutes, so don't assume![:@]

i think that
pretty much
proves my point
no nitro engine
will go almost two gallons
without needing retuning
and anyone who wants
to ignore that, well
you'll ruin your engine too

RE: TRX 2.5 are garbage
i hate it when people
blame a perfectly good
engine on their own shortcomings
the trx 2.5 is not
and has never been garbage
the fact that it lasted 2 gallons
after never being tuned
is testament to the
fact that it is a strong engine
harsh?
maybe
but the truth none-the-less
oh, and here's some for real advice
the 3.3 uses the 2.5 crank and con rod
they don't like to be abused as
much as the 2.5
and the con rod can let go
if run lean/abused

RE: TRX 2.5 are garbage
Running a rich engine will not wreck it, only burn glow plugs out. Running a lean engine will wreck it.
The worst a rich engine can really do is squash the con-rod bearing a little when its cold started, that will not stop it running or holding a tune.
Sounds like its getting hot, does the body have holes in it for air flow ?
If its set rich, has never been touched, and is dieing under acceleration, at an assumption, one could guess its leaning itself out, HSN rich enough ? Top end needle.Or overheat.
Air leak may have started if its all set rich, or the glow plug is fried, or its set SO rich that fuel is spattering onto glow plug at WOT and killing it.
Either way its tune related.
At 2.5 gallon, about 10 letres, your engine may have wear on it, that would show YOU, no one else here, how well you run it in, honesty is all that counts here, we all stuff up, lve been into nitro for about 20 years now, l have lost count of the mistakes lve made, and even l stuff a motor run-in every now and then, sometimes out of sheer daftness, just had to see how fast it went LOL, my revo has about 6 gallons through it still idles, but it dont quite have the punch it used to, l run my idle a touch higher now, for obvious reasons.
It doesnt take much, one, two, maybe three overheats, and the engine life goes from an average of 100 hours back to about 40 to 50 hours of usable power. Thats at a guess about 4 gallons, 4 and a half maybe.

RE: TRX 2.5 are garbage
yes i did cut holes in the body, maybe i will make it bigger. i hardly go through glow plugs but i will swap in a new fresh one. When i try leaning the engine out from factory settings, it only overheats so i end up putting it back to factory settings.
Well thanks for the advice and ya since its my first every hobby level car, i probably did ruin te engine. Now i know that after i break it in i need to immediately tune it.

if it is done for then i would do the ERP and get a 3.3

Well if it comes down to nothing but taking up space I might. Just let me know; though you will be spending more time fixing it than using it lol.

RE: TRX 2.5 are garbage
As much as I would like to say that the 2.5 is garbage, its not too horrible lol. It was my first engine, it gave me tuning nightmares and made me hate the hobby, and it wasn't spectacular on power. After I bought my Savage, I saw the light and realized that not all nitro engines are impossible to tune Although I wasn't really satisifed with it, it DID last 8.5 gallons running extremely hot temps with smoke coming from the head, and saw ARO on around 5 occasions in its lifetime so I have to give it some props. Your case is simply user error, as mine was in the tuning department.

RE: TRX 2.5 are garbage
here is a video to show how long the engine runs before stopping. It is about 1 minute which is annoying because everytime it stops, i have to wait for it to cool before i can start it up again. Check it out. My dad also suggested that it is too rich and is loading up and stalling but there is still smoke from the head(not shown in video) so i am really confused and since it is my first nitro/hobby level rc truck i want to run it.

PS- the sound in the background is my dad with a weedwacker LOL...
