What do you guys use to hang your planes for storage? I want to build some kind of rack that is simple, quick and cheap to place my wings on and hang my fuses maybe from the ceiling beams in the basement.

Thinking of something like two 2x4's running up the wall about 4 feet apart and then sticking some pvc pipe or something in the 2x4 at an upward angle and then putting some pipe insulation over it to cushion it. Any better or more interesting ideas?

Also, to hang the fuses some plant holder type eyelets with some cotton rope. Maybe one for the front and one for the tail? Suggestions on better ways???

I think the last of the jersey 60+ degree days has been seen until march/april so gotta get the stuff high up in case the sump pump ever decides to go on vacation

Hey there

I take 1/2 inch EMT conduit and bend it in a C. Drywall screw it to the ceiling in my shop and slip pipe insulation on the pipe and lay the wing on it. They hang great and are out of the way. You can adjust height from ceiling to suit. A ten foot stick costs a buck and a half. You can get one set out of a stick.

I made my wing rack from 1"x2"x8' furing strips
made in a frame 4'x8' hanging on one end by a
strap in each corner for the hinge and a rope on the other to hold it up, used 1/4" plywood to
make the L brackets to hold the wings in place
the L brackets face the top. As for the planes
I use 1/8" rope looped around the tail & prop
then run the long rope through a pully and
pull it up to the rafters and tie off the rope.

Is it possible to post a few up here? Just make them jpg and under 80k and under 650x650 pixels. This way everyone can check it out...sounds like a good idea...what exactly is EMT Conduit? Home depot sell it?

Couple of 2x4's, couple of wooden dowels, little bit of pipe insulation, and you have yourself an airplane or wing rack.

This rack is floor to ceiling, nailed into floor joist for stability. I can hold four 40-60 size airplanes on this rack. It's set away from the wall to allow for tail feathers and landing gear. I also have a wing rack built the same way elsewhere in my shop that can hold about 16 wings I would guess.

Have same exact plane...unless...is that the Kyosho 60 or 40 size? Mine is the smaller one. That is what I was looking to do but instead of dowels maybe some pvc piping?

Curious as to what that EMT conduit is though?

I hang my planes vertically from the wall. I screw a large eyehook inot a wall stud then just string the plane up from the gear.
To the left in this pic you can see the wing rack I made out of PVC.

Hello there, its nice to see that there is a question here that I as a noobie can answer. Though it isn't much to do with planes or such.

EMT is also known as thinwall. Its a type of lightwieght electrical conduit that is used in home and commercial construction to run wires through. Its walls are very thin, hense thinwall, and easily bendable with or without tools, can be cut easily with a hacksaw, and comes in 10 foot lenghts. Sizes of pipe are measured in inner diameter and run from 1/2" up to and over 1" sizes.

In other words, its the metal pipe that runs from one electrical box to another.

Now you know more than you ever needed, or wanted, to know about thinwall. A.K.A. EMT...

Go to Lowe's and get the CHEAP unpainted adjustable shelving strips they come in lengths of 2 to4 ft. Screw them into studs with 1.5in drywall screws and your drill. Use the CHEAP unpainted brackets lengths 8 to 12in ( deeper ones made by scewing two together) to protect the fuse and wings cover them with pipe insulation. This system is fully adjustable and goes up fast. Pete

Bet a dollar to a dozen of donuts I could step on either of those planes within 10 minutes of working in that surgery center - they do heart transplants there, don't they????

Got my wing rack built...bought some 1 inch pvc for the vertical pieces and some 1/4" for the horizonatals and used T fittings with reducers for the 1/4". Took me 10 minutes to build a floor to ceiling wing rack to hold 6 wings (first wing is at 5 feet just in case basement ever sees water!). Added some foam pipe insulation and it is an instant organizational thing of beauty.

Total cost was under 20 bucks!

Next I have to decide on which way to go for the fuselages. I bought some heavy duty hooks and might just hang them from string off the ceiling beams until I get around to building some kind of rack like Plane Insanes.

Needed someway to store my P51 till my shop is rebuilt. So I went by the LHS and found a hanger by Hanger 9 (sorry ). THought it was kinda neat so I grabbed it.

I think I like it better, the fins are up high where I won't bump them.

Now all I need is a rack to hang those 80" wings on (they won't hang vertical ).

Hmmm. The wing rack gives me an idea, I have 2-10' pieces of 4/3"pvc left over from building on of my truck racks. May have enough for a rack like yours - Thanks....


I would hang my from the ceiling but I am to short, but if I ever got them up there I wouldn't have to worry about hitting my head

I put 2x4's up the wall and used a 3/4" wood bit to make holes just deep enough for the point to almost exit. Then I insert 3/4" dowels about 12" long. You get 4 out of a 48" birch from Ace Hdw. Then the 1/2" pipe insulation fits perfectly over the dowel because 1/2" galvanized pipe is about 3/4" od. wnn

However, I have a question about forming the rack from PVC... Do I have to do anything to keep the horizontal rods from drooping ??

I also need to make a storage rack for my planes, I am gonna use pvc pipe and make a sort of rack and hang them from the roof, though i do not know what materials to use? My neighbor made about 5 of them and they look like they work really well, because I cant afford to have my dad's motorcycle crush it like it almost did last time.

Another idea that I use is bending wire in a fashion to hang the planes by the props. I have never had a problem w/distortion or structural failure to the props from this. When you figure a plane can hover, there is far more stress on the prop hovering than hanging. My plane sizes are the .40 and smaller. This conserves a lot of space. Later,
