30% KMP Extra Builld
Well, I picked one of these up last year and decided to go to work on it a few weeks ago. I sold my 84" wild hare last year and miss it. This kit has a lot of opportunity for improvement, and will require some TLC is looks like.
The fit and finish of the fuselage had me a nervous.. so.. The first thing I did was fill the gaps in the gear box that ties into the engine box rails full of poly glue. sanded and de-beaded the glue. then fiber glassed the inside of the box. I then built brackets to go inside the box to strap the engine to.

My kit did not come with tabs for the horizontal stablizers. the fusalge had allready been provision for blind nuts in the inside. so... MORE G10 .. (G10 ROCKS!) mcmastercar.com

RE: 30% KMP Extra Builld
the finished engine box was WAY TOO long for any engine a guy would run on this bird. The kit did come wiht an extra engine box plate for the nose. I measured my ZDZ80 to be 6" long, and te debth of the cowl to be ~4.5ish... so I chopped it off with a saws-all. reglued the new plate on the nose. layed in fiberglass cloth inside and outside of the box to give it more torshion/sher strength.
then instead of useing the bracket that came with the kit to tie of the engine box firewall, I used 1.5" aluminum angle stock (ace hardware) and fabricate brackets to go inside the box. of cousre the engine box has right thust built into it, requiring these two brackets to be + or - a few degrees off from 90. I heated them up with a propain tourch, and flexed them until the set inside the box flush.
I also radiused the corners, and deburred them so they were easer to look at
I used stainless socket head bolts, and counter sunk them on the outside of the engine box rails.

I modified the original gas tank tray. rotaining it 180, put it more aft, and over the wing tube, with the intent to prevent CG shift as the plane burns off fuel. Also dolled it up with some ultra-coat-plus.

I added a G10 "firewall" on the F1 former, to prevent fuel/oil getting into the the fusealge from the rear mounted carb. that G10 is good stuff to work with.

Hinge Points installed in the tail surfaces. I did not want run CA hinges, so I installed robarts. I found that useing a sharp wood burning tool works great as a pilot hole implement.[8D]

My engine is 6" long and i had to cut off 1.5" off the box. then installed the new firewall it came with. I forgot to add margin for gap ... So I added .25 ply standoffs.

Thanks for measuring. I will need to cut my motor box as well.
At first I looked at your pictures and was confused, I thought the medallion on the side of the engine said ZDZ 30. When I looked closer, I realize it is an 80. This thing will be a monster! Do you think you will have clearance for a prop larger than 24"? My ZDZ 80s both ran very well on a 26x10.
I notice you are using Robart hinge points. It is good to know they fit. I will probably use the same. I never trust the CA hinges in bigger planes.

Could you measure the distance from the firewall to the drive washer? I am planning ahead.

To cut back the firewall I did 1 7/8 inch for My DA-50 with standard standoffs.
This gave me a nice 3/8 inch gap between the spinner back plate and the cowl.
There is a few pages of info here if you guys are interested. I have about 35 flight hours on this airframe, now at 16 lbs 1 oz dry. Guys at the club think its the best 300 dollar airframe that they have ever seen.

I ran the same engine on my wild hare 84" with a few 26X10, (ran a 24X8 MSC too). It was a vertical rocket queen! I'll post some pics of it later.

I got the aileron points installed. I used the CA things to mocked up the surfaces, then marked the certer of each hing on both the wing/stab and control surface. Then removed the surfaces. Used a wood burning tool, with a sharp point, to burn pilot holes for the 3/16" bores for the robarts. This made a nice seal arround the edge of the hole with the covering.

FF,
Where can I buy some of the G10 boards? I love the F1 idea, I want to use it on my H9 Extra... It's getting nasty inside the fuse.
Thanks.

I haven't begun assembling my plane, just dry fitting some stuff on. When I went to put the wings on, I noticed right off that the rear dowel fit into it's receiving hole, but the forward hole was off probably 1/8" inch. The other side did the same. Did you notice this as well? If so did you plug and redrill or just elongate the hole?

I picked up a new / out of box 85" KMP Edge that did not come with a manual. Anyone know where I might find one online?
Thanks in advance!

The plane is coming along nicely. I am glad the hinge points work, I have much more faith in them than CA hinges.
Could you comment on the quality of the rest of the hardware?
Thanks!

Did you notice a misalignment of the front dowel pins on the wing as well? The back pin fit well but the front is off ny about 1/8".
I am going to plug and redrill to insure I have enough secure alignment.
