Lanier Edge 30% & Zdz80rv, Need Building Tips Please
One more week before the Wram show and i will be picking up the 30% Edge and a Zdz 80rv with bisson muffler. I need info on how to set up the engine and cowl. Also need to know radio equipment setup. I will be installing 1 receiver with 2 1650 nimh batteries on it. One 1100 battery for ignition. 2 servos for ailerons, 2 for elevator (hitec 5645) and the rudder will get 1 hitec 5945 on pull pull. How did your planes balance with similar setups? Do i need nose weight? Pictures would be greatly appreciated. I read all the threads on this plane. There is so much info that it got all jumbled up in my head.. So, with that said. I'd like a refresher coarse please.

There are some pictures in my gallery showing the ZDZ-80 installed on my 35% Lanier Giles. For your rudder set-up I would go with a 5735 not a 5945. You'll want plenty of rudder authority, don't think I would trust it to one servo unless it was a 1/4 scale servo. Your other equipment choices are fine. Balance per the manufacturers recommendations. I use a set of kollercraft long legs to balance my giant scale planes. Since it's an ARF you can't control how heavy it's built so you'll have to put it on the balancer to see if it need nose weight or tail weight. Try to shift the batteries around so you don't have to add lead. For your batteries use a minimum of 1200mah on ignition(I seem to remember this was recommended by Mike at RC Showcase), 1650 nimh are OK, I prefer 2700's..use two switches.

5735 servo
Does this servo require its own battery? I seem to recall somebody saying so. Can you use a 6V battery on ignition or should i just stay with 4.8V?

I have one 5645 on my rudder and do knife edge loops. Lots of flights and she is doing great. My first one I had two 5645's on the rudder and I cant tell a difference other than I am able to get the lead out of the nose by using just one servo. If you do go dual I would suggest putting them under the wing tube and not in the tail. Two servos in the tail takes ~ 1 pound in the nose to offset the weight due to the moments. I am using a ZDZ 60 on mine and cant imagine this plane with an 80.... It will be a real rocket.

Akflyer,
I like rockets.. Just to recap. Your 60 required nose weight with one servo on rudder? So, the 80 being heavier should be OK i hope. How many batteries were you using and where are they placed.

I used a 6V 3000 on both ingnition and receiver. The receiver bat is on one side of the motor box and the ignition batt is on the other side. I took all the lead out and now am at 6" on the CG but it is a little tail heavy for flying IMAC but 3D is great. It does drop the tail when you slow it down, however, it will slow down to a crawl and still not drop a wing. It has no bad snap habits till you get it back to ~ 6 5/8".

akflyer....Have you had any problems having both batteries in the motor box? No radio interference?

They are on the outside of the engine box, but I have had no interference issues with this setup. I know they say 6" minumum but I have been closer than this without any problems.

elevator control horn distance?
I am using the stock control horn on the elevators. Airwild 1 1/4" servo horn on servo. My question is whats the proper length of the elevator control horn to have good authority on the surface. Also, I would like to know where you take the measurement from.
Thanks

Here are some pics of zdz80, hope they help. 3 degrees right thrust should be sufficient. Mount cowl after engine is mounted. Only added 3 1/4 ounces to the nose to balance at 5 1/2" from the leading edge. 2 servos in the tail, rudder on pull pull lands at a crawl at this setup. Weight about 21 lbs. give or take a few ounces.

Wheely
Thanks for the info and pics. They helped alot. I was wondering how you handled the control horns for elevator. How long were your servo arm on the elevator servo? How long was the control horn set at? I hope i said that clearly?
Thanks

You have to keep the distance from the hinge line to the center of the horn, the same length as you servo arm or you really start loosing torque.
You can make the distance from the hinge line to the center pin on the clevis/horn longer than the arm, and you will gain torque, but will loose throw.

I think i will keep the servo arm length and the horn the same. I have the fuel tank set low on the fuselage. Does anybody think I will have a problem with fuel draw?

I actually have the tank set sideways with a 12 oz smoke tank next to it. I'm gonna be using the slimline show time pump. My plane is gonna be heavy. 2 receiver batteries and a choke servo. I hope everything balances out when I'm done.

My first one had twin 20 oz tanks. as long as the tanks are on the CG it is not too bad. the plane can handle the weight just fine, especially with the ZDZ 80. I did not put the smoke on my secong one because I put a cannister muffler in it so no smoke for me anymore.

Would the Mac Minarelli 70cc be a good fit for this 30% Edge? Mine is converted to CH ignition and the engine weighs roughly 6-1/2lbs with muffler. Ignition module and battery add another 12 Oz. behind the firewall.
I'm not looking to 3D, just basic aerobatics.

Akflyer...With 2 tanks in the fuse. How did your plane balance. Did you still use pull pull on the rudder? Is there a benefit for using pull pull on rudder than having the servo in the tail? Besides the balance issue.
