Composite ARF Mig29
I'm currently building one of the latest mig29 kits from Composite-ARF. So far everything is going really well. I was wondering if there is anyone actively working on this kit.
My progress is going pretty good so far. It would be pretty handy to see what others are doing and may add a little inspiration to keep cranking away at it!
Thanks

Hi Van,
I am part way through mine but it is on ice at the moment while I fitout some arf's. Have you been in contact with Peter at Intairco?
Regards,
Craig.

RE: Composite ARF Mig29
Hi Craig,
Yes I have been getting tons of info/help and all my parts from Intairco.
Mr DJ,
It has active flaps and rudders the ailerons do not move. From what I have seen it does not need them at all!
So far I have all landing gear setup/rigged with rams. will cycle them at a later date when I'm further along. I'm not ready to put hydraulic lines in yet.
The verticle stabs are installed now. all gear doors are about 90% done. The main gear doors are hinged and hydro rams installed just have two rams to go and 2 doors to go is all.
I like the new tanks that come with it now. There are only two large tanks now that are together 8ltrs I think. I never built up split fuel tank shells,
Intairco provided the custom pluming parts for this. The kit comes with nice fittings but I wanted something better. Working on the intake ramps at the moment.
I will be sure to post images shortly.
Please feel free to post your progress/pics here to if you want.
More to come

I would have to cut out the ailerons and make them functonal - I'm not into tailerons at all, except on an F-14 with its wings sweapt back.
A good friend of mine is building a scratch built B-1B. I gotta have one: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_8121418/tm.htm

I just upacked the box on kit number 96. Keep me posted on your progress ... it may be a little while before I get to mine. I am particularly interested in anything you find where the instructions may be off a bit.
Good luck with yours. I did find a source for a museum scale cockpit if you are interested.

With both Hawks finished came back to my Mig yesterday to change the Omega pump for the Hausl unit., but still using the Omega controller and lock valves, result: it works as I had hoped !
The Hausl pump is much better than the Omega in that it is a constant pressure system, not timed like the O. That means that the hyd services always have pressure to them and keeps the wheels firmly up and the gear doors firmly closed, no sagging.
In addition the operating time of the gear is cut from 9-10 secs with the O pump to 5-6 seconds with the Hausl and getting better, faster, as air is working its way out. Its operating at a precharge of 10 bars to get the best retraction speed and using a Duralite 8.4 battery.
The hyd, reservoir is made from a Nalgene 8 ounce round bottle and the pump and pressure switch unit are both mounted on the forward face of the nose former using the excellent fuel pump mounts from MAP, perfect for the job. Control vlaves are the same as came in the original kit.
Just some cable and tubing tidying up and then onto installation of the two PST 1300s and maybe change the Powerbox to the Royal, currently in my Euro (or Weatronics 2.4 !!).
This model IS hard work but it flies superbly and IS worth the effort, I'm glad I stuck with mine despite all the hassle.
All in all I am very happy with this hybrid system which did 30 perfect cycles this morning.
Final tip, make sure ALL flexible hoses are the Festo 10 bar hard plastic type, other tubing may well burst (dont ask !) and use securing wire on all fittings where tube is simply pushed over them, it will save you time, in the long run, and mess !

Hi David,
Thanks for the info. I'm very happy with the kit and the build is really tight. Its alot of fun building this thing knowing what the end result will be. I was looking at using the Royal myself.
Dont know much about the Weatronics 2.4 units. Please post some install picks when you can.

I will do that. Final few leaks eliminated and everthing is working perfectly. Only had the machine for 8 years so making good progress, but at least its flown ! Just waiting for the PST 1300 (anything over this thrust rating is totally unneccesary) and then final detailing !
Looking great !
Weatronic 2.4 review in edition after next of RCJI.
Regards,
David.

RE: Composite ARF Mig29
What kind of leaks did you have? The PST 1300's seem really nice. Looks like they have a few pounds more thrust than the jetCat P120. I have one in my F-15 and am really happy with it.
I just took a bunch of Photos of the mig29 to post and forgot my USB cable at work! so I will post my progress Monday night NZ time.
David, How much did yours weigh with the tanks full?
Seems that with all scale options and fuel it should come to about 52-54lbs I think. Having 65-70lbs of thrust should give the thing good thrust performance I would think.
I have seen 3 fly with twin P160's and they moved really nice and have plenty of reserve thrust for maneuvers. Its a heavy jet so having a little more thump may be good?

RE: Composite ARF Mig29
Good Morning!
I maidend my MiG 29 three weeks ago. Power is one (!) 185N turbine which is installed in the right engine bay with a straight pipe that blow to the right side at the end... I made only two flights, but that was enough to say, that it was the right way to built it with one engine.....my MiG is about 17kg dry, 4,3l of fuel and she went away with 80° after running 120m on tarmac. Of course she wanted to go the left side during the starting run, but it was no problem, the 5955TG on the nosewheel held her on the right line. In the air there is no signifikant drift, it just flies absolutly awesome.
She flew so stable, that I was able to move back my shacking fingers from the sticks to allow her straight and stable fly bys.
It´s a great aircraft!! I only have tailerons, no flaps, rudders oder slats. And it´s absolutly perfect! Haeusl systems for retracts, works flawless.
Kindest regards
Julian

RE: Composite ARF Mig29
Getting the speed brakes completed and installed next week
New fuel tanks with Intairco plumbing
Cockpit kit
Gear doors open. I used the Intairco carbon fiber doors after I cut the original doors out.
The new kit has carbon fiber in all areas where its needed!
Doors Closed.
Stab mounting pins set
getting there.

RE: Composite ARF Mig29
Does not look like much but the amount of work that it took to get a really nice fit for doors took time. and the intakes have allot of steps! not hard just takes a little time is all.
Getting the LG struts and hydraulic rams to all function at scale angles took time and was alot of fun to set. I found that using a shim or to is needed on the mounting blocks.
I spent almost a week playing with them! again just took time but not hard to set.
I'm detailing all my landing gear now. This will take some time to make hoses and details in this area.
The upper intake ramps and lower intake ramps are all waiting for some love now!
Having a blast building the jet and will post more pics with progress asap.

RE: Composite ARF Mig29
Hey Craig, Please post an image of what you are talking about when you get a sec.
I test mounted my horizontal stabs and mine looked pretty damn good as is.
the right H-Stab angles down a little more that left but not by much at all. I was thinking of correcting it but may do this at the very end if I feel its worth it!!
Note they do angle down a little on the full size jet. the angle should be about 90degrees in relation to the V-Stab. A good 3 view will show this angle.
Im currently getting the SpeedBrakes, Intakes and upper lower ramps doors done. This will keep me busy!

RE: Composite ARF Mig29
Yeah Craig, I will be correcting one of them now!
Its funny but after talking with Peter A. at Intairco and its not a big job. He said you probably spend 9-10 hours thinking about doing it and it only takes about 45min to and hour to do.
I think that can be said about everything to do with modeling for me anyway! but I hope to have the Mig done in 4-5 more months at the latest. I received it about 3 months ago and have been eager as hell to get some air time with
it from the moment I opened the box.
If anyone has the CG and control throws that would be nice.
Anyway,
Speed brakes are done now. I'm going to focus on the intakes and ramps next week.
Here are some images of the progress.
