Bizzaro Built Sledge
I am going to build two more Sledges and thought I might share a few of the things I learned after building the first 6.
To me the wing has been the most time consuming here is what I do now.
1. Lay out your table with some 3/8 balsa blocks ( use the heavy pieces for this )
A little extra time spent in this area is time well spent make sure the blocks are straight and are pinned in firm ( no wiggle )

RE: Bizzaro Built Sledge
After this just put a good straight edge on trailing edge throw your spar down and start lineing the the ribs up.
I like to use a set of 123 blocks to hold the ribs straight Total time of construction so far is 1 hour.

Got ya, also I did not know there was going to be more to the post. You are the man on building this thing, I wish I had an arf, but maybe that would be bad for you LOL. I appreciate your offering of help/methods/suggestions to potential builders. Jeff W.

Nice work Bill... I've been using the heavy 3/8" blocks for the ribs to pin into as well..... I like your idea of using 123 blocks....
I tried the tri stock for the leading edge.... It was better.. but still not perfect.... So I took a piece of 3/8" balsa and cut a piece 1" wide with a 30 deg angle on both sides.... Worked perfect.... Super easy to sheet to and made a perfectly round leading edge....
I'll post some pics later...

I am sure it works great Paul, but you know how the kit thing is. Get the best pre-made part you can and put it in there. Saves time and money so that is probably where it will stay for now.
I guess that means you are building one for Gator. What happened to Home Depot? Or are you like me, need a new one every summer? Jeff W.

OK Bill And you guys after reading and seeing tons of stuff on the OMP or Morris Hobbies Edge 540 you have convinced me to build one my self. I am going to make it a X-mas gift to myself.
Bill if you can tell me what kit you bought? Morris or OMP. And I hope you keep working on the two airframes and share it with all of us your building skills and any mods . Keep the Pic and progress and I will order mine ASAP to catch up. SL (#429)

RE: Bizzaro Built Sledge
Steve,
Lonestar is A #1 in my book great service and very nice Balsa, I went with the short kits because I was building 6 Sledges and was'nt going to use any hardware, One benifit of the short kit is you can buy 48" sheeting and do one wing with 2- 4x48" sheets instead of 4- 4x36" sheets, you can probably save a few ounces by hand picking the wood also. If I was going to build just 1 I would probably buy the kit. The short kit comes with...
1. All the laser cut balsa parts to do the wings, fuse, and vertical stab.
2. Laser cut plywood for the forward fuse and two hatch covers.
3. Hardwood for the motor mounts.
4. A set of rolled plans, a material list.
Call morris speak to Debbie and ask for the Pro Bro deal and give the secret handshake.
The handshake will work with the kit also.
I havent built the OMP but I understand it is very nice build also.

RE: Bizzaro Built Sledge
I ran a price check with Balsa USA using a material list from a post few months back. And it all came to $16.68 and & $ 7.95 for shipping not bad. I will look in to the larger 48'' sizes to save time. I built a Balsa Nova over the summer. And had to toss out 1/2 the wood. I have enough hardware and pull pull stuff to get going - I will have to make or order some landing gear. Thanks SL

Second that, but have a Crazy Leg question.
What are you guys using, regular crazy legs or heavy duty?
I've had both. I like the stiffness of the heavy duty's, but they definetly weigh more. Is it worth it IYO?

I like the light Crazy legs. I had the heavy ones on my Knife but I don't see enough difference to warant the heavier ones. I guess I'm useing "regular"
But I will no longer promote them as "unbreakable" as I have now broke 2 of them. But the are way better than the AL, and from the posts I've read they don't break as easy as the CF. Oh, and for $7 per set of Crazy legs there is a pretty big price incentive!!!!!!

RE: Bizzaro Built Sledge
You have to understand one thing, Gordo and myself are still learning the fine art of 3D and sometimes we hit the ground a little hard...For this the Krazy legs are a must also the Burrito... I can not wait to get a Sledge flying and I plan on putting CF gear on one of them... I know some of this stuff has been gone over before but I do have just a few things left to say...
1. After you get the top done be sure that when you flip the wing over to do the bottom that you support it as good and straight as you did the for the top.
Not the best pic but you can see the blocks under the main spar... I pin the whole wing back down and check it with a straight edge again before putting the sheeting on.
