Default GP Super Sportster EP Glow Conversion

Has anyone converted one of these? I have a nice running .28 two stroke that would make one of these fly real nice.

I put an OS 25FX in mine a while back ... flew very nicely. Enough power for almost any manouver, took off within like 40ft. Sadly i lost it to a nearly invisible wire... those used to ground telephone poles. I liked that plane so much that I just finished building another one.

I gave up on the Electric on my G.P. Super Sportster EP (no Power). I removed the cowl, built up the front end, added a servo, added a fuel tank and an OS .25LA. I picked it up from Tower's Scratch and dent for $52.00. Much cheaper than the a new moter and batt. What a fun, sweet, and super fast flying aircraft. Recommend this change over to anyone that is willing to fly Glow.

Based on a couple of email I have added a photo of this aircraft. If I had to do it over I would have rounded the front engine box that iI built. However it flys great as is. All I did was removed the cowl, added a ply firewall to hold the engine, built up the front end, added a servo for throtle, added a fuel tank, and an OS .25LA. What a fun, sweet, and super fast flying aircraft. Recommend this change-over to anyone that is willing to fly Glow. NOTE I recommend checking the wing screws after evey flight, they tend to come loose during flight due to the vibration. Enjoy!!

That looks like fun. I am going to get one of these some day and do the conversion.

What wing screws does this kit use? Could they be switched easily to nylon to help them hold?

The wing screws are 5mm SS screws. I don't know if they make them in nylon.

Will the stock motor mount configuration hold a glow engine or does a new mount need to be fabricated. Also what size fuel tank are you running and how does it affect the weight and cg. Just wondering as I recently purchased one and got the ht-600 powerplant but I want more run time instead of expensive limited batteries on 6 minute flights. Also will a .32 be too much engine?

Yes, I removed the cowl, added a ply firewall to hold the engine, built up the front end, added a servo for throtle, a fuel tank (don't know what size-- one that fit into the batt compartment), and an OS .25LA. The OS .25LA is as big as I would go. The GP SS EP airplane is now very fast. I have attached a photo of the converson.

okay, thanks dan. I think I'm gonna go with a magnum .25 Tower has a good deal on them. And a 190cc fuel tank seems to be a good fit.

would this plane be short lived due to the
fact is was desgined for E-pwr? I was
under the impression a glow engine
would eventuly rattle a Electric duty
airframe apart in time. Or am hearing
rumors?

decay, I will let the board know if I have a problem. So far, so good, however I'm not a hard flyer. When I fly, just a few rolls, a few loops, and fly the pattern.

Ihave the supersportster new unasembled. I also have an Enya .19 with only 12 flights;good strong engine. Given how fast it is with OS25 would this be enough engine for good smooth aerobatics? THANKS

Any updated info? I'm just about to start my conversion using:

OS .25 LA
6oz tank
HS-81's
and a JR 1100mAh Ni-CD for a flight pack.

Any pics or info on strengthening the Firewall?

The only photos I have are attached. I just cut off the engine mounts and added ply wood to the fire wall for the engine mount. Here is a copy of what I posted a few months ago.

Hi Guys,

I actually have two of the original Super Sportster 20's (which is what the EP is based on)

One is new in the box, one I converted to Electric with brushless motor.

The electric one was going to have a saito 30 installed on it when I was given a motor / esc and battery to make it electric.

The electric one was getting 6-8 minute flights on NiMh, when we changed to Lipo (In vegas at superfly 4) I was shot down as I took off. I was running a 2480 Lipo 14.8 volt pack and was expected to get 8-10 minute flights from it.

From all that I have seen of the planes (including the new EP/ARF they should be able to fly well with either 2 or 4 stroke motors, but I would agree to add / strengthen the firewall for the motor. Weight wise, I am fairly close in weight on my .20 in comparison to the EP. (3 lbs)

I have just finished repairing it, and will be re-maidening it this weekend (weather permitting --it's supposed to rain here).

Good luck with your re-conversions to Nitro. It looks like you have done nice work on them.

I have yet to weigh it but I should be around the same factory weight. I also strengthened the firewall not visible in the pics with 3 layers of 1/8" plywood in front of the firewall and one layer of 1/8" behind the firewall. I also added for to the sides of the 6oz fuel tank to keep it from shifting. I'm guessing that should suffice...

Vendetta, you do very nice work. I really like how the Cowl turned out. I never thought to cut the top out for the motor. Nice job, let me know you like your first flight.

Big Oakden, I too have a GP SS 20 I picked up at an auction this past fall. I was very surprised that it had a O.S 40 max on it. I took it to the field, fired it up, and away it went. That thing is super fast, and is very fun to fly... once I got it on the ground and applied an lot of low rates to the controls.

That looks great. I still want to do one of these. I like the cowl attached and may see if I could mount the engine inverted. Has anyone tried that?
