FUTABA 18MZ
Hey you guys.....
I read a lot of gossip on the web about a new SBUS transmitter from FUTABA which is logic since at the moment the SBUS receivers can accept 16+2 channels total 18 channels but there is no transmitter yet available to transmit 18 channels.

1) Do you have any info on this? What do you think?
2) Do you think the current 14MZ will be sw upgradeable to 18MZ or to SBUS compatible http://www.futaba-rc.com/software-updates.html for those FUTABA 14MZ owners (like me)?????

Telemetry refers to the ability of the receiver to send information to the transmitter. For example, the Weatronics system send Rx battery voltage, Tx signal quality and strength, Rx temperature, all servo positions, GPS coordinates, etc.
An example of how to use it: You can setup an alarm in case your battery voltage drop below a specific value, your Tx signal quality drops to a low value, etc... Imagine being able to do a maiden and in real-time get feedback with this type of information.. I would not go back to be blind with the lack of information after having access to this.

okay now that makes more sense, that is the only thing that would make my 14mz perfect, battery voltage readouts on the radio and having fuel amount readout is the heat. I almost bought a Hitec Aurora for that very reason LOL

They need to come out with a new radio soon; the 14MZ has been around quite a while now. I'm not sure exactly how long but it's got to be 5 years or so and a lot has happened since then. I'm getting in desperate need of replacing my 9Z but don't want to but something that may potentially be replaced soon. Also, I want a purpose-designed 2.4 system (non-modular) and telemetry will seal the deal.
Unless they come up with something quite soon I might have to start looking around for something else (Maybe Jeti?).

A little explanation: all current 14MZ are fully compatible with S.BUS receivers. But not only the 14MZ but all current Futaba transmitters.
S.Bus is a receiver feature and not transmitter related. What Futaba has done is foresee the future 18MZ - which is expected not before mid 2012- number of available channels.
By the way, with S.Bus receiver you may use both standar channels (with analogic, digital, brushless and even S.Bus servos) and/or the S.Bus (analogic, digital and brushless servos with adaptor cables and S.Bus servos direct) outputs.
Regarding S.Bus I recommend reading what is explained in Futaba USA section (English lenguage) on the matter before making wrong ideas of the system.

I wasnt making wrong anything, I know what the SBus does I just said it would be nice have those things. And 14mz user will be able to upgrade to the new features

You'd need to go with the 18mz to get the full 18 S.Bus channels working. At the moment you might get the 12+2 channels working. I'm not sure however what happens with the MPDX-1 channel expander http://manuals.hobbico.com/fut/futm4...dx1-manual.pdf
Anyone knows if this is working with S.bus? Should do anyway.
I could really use 1 or 2 more analogue channels.
Here is a list of channels I'm using now on my planes:
1. Elevator
2. Rudder
3. Throttle
4. Aileron 1
5. Aileron 2
6. Flap
7. Gyro gain (for aileron)
8. Turbine
9. Brakes
10. Steering
11. Smoke
12. Powerbox failsafe
13 (on-off) lights
I would like another 2 analogue channels to be able to set the gain on 2 gyros, set the lights in analogue mode (not digital) etc. And imagine that the elevators and flaps are on 1 channel. Maybe I could save 1 channel from the ailerons although the setup is easier now through the radio.

I have not used the MPDX-1 with S-Bus, but I have used it on a few jets with a 6014 FS and 6014 HS to get additional proportional channels for non-flight surfaces, just as you say .. it works just fine and it is surprisingly easy to exceed the 12 analog channels on the 14MZ when setting up a complex jet. I like to use one channel for each control surface for ease of setup and flexibility. But if you think about it, use an F-18 as an example: if you want aileron droop + differential you can't use a matchbox on ailerons ... if you want ailevator, you can't use a matchbox on the stabs .. if you want to cant the rudders in our out, you can't use a matchbox for rudder .. if you want separate travel in different modes on rudder+ nosewheel you can't use a matchbox for that .. well .. you get the idea :-)

As noted above, S-Bus has NOTHING to do with the transmitter. It is entirely done in the RX. It can support up to the maximum number of channels your transmitter has. Sp for instance, you could get the "3-channel" R6203SB receiver and use all 14 channels of your 14MZ using S-Bus, even though the RX is "only" 3 channels.

If the question is if there will be an update available to make the 14MZ into a 18 channel system, I do not know but the 8FG now have a software update that transformes it into a 12+2 channel system....

Telemetry will have a huge impact on E-powered models. You will no longer have to guess how much capacity is left in the flight regardless of your flight profile.
Fuel level sensors will keep wet fuel powered models from running empty.

What do you mean when you say "stack"?? You can put them in series. I know that in order to get redudancy you can get the following aftermarket products all compatible with S.Bus

If you look at the instruction on the new 14 and 8 channel rx’s you can put a link onto one rx.
This tells it to only process the upper channels.
So, if we had two 8 channels rx’s side by side, both bound to the same tx.
The one without the link would process channels 1 to 8, the one with the link will process 9 and above.
So two 8 channel rx’s become effectively one 16 channel rx.
I believe you can also do two 14 channels and even mix a 8 with a 14.

I'm trying to work out why you would use this feature. What would the benefit be of using two 8 channel Rxs instead of a single 14 channel, if you only have 14 Tx channels available?
