Turbine set up help
I'm building my first turbine and I would like to know if there anyone who has built turbine jets and lives in Fontana/Rancho Cucamunga area of California could help me out???
The model is Falcon 120ARF and the turbine is JJ1800. I need help mounting the turbine, running all the wiring, plumbing the fuel lines both kerosene and propane, mounting the fedac on-board starter, just everything to make the turbine run. I'm looking for a person who has done it and can direct me as far as parts to buy and setting up the model to fly.
Please live in the local area as that its hard to describe a problem or issue through email.
You can contact me 909/233-4502

RE: Turbine set up help
20lb thrust turbine ??? Thats a bit overkill for that frame....
read the falcon 120 threads here on RCU... lots of great info.
Don't get too excited.....run the engine on the bench first....get used to how it operates.
Take your time...Its a pain to have to pull all that spaghetti back out of the plane if something fails to work.

RE: Turbine set up help
From the research I have done on the JJ turbine you need to run a header tank so that you dont get bubbles in the fuel system. I understand there a bit of a pain, but I like a challenges. I have read the thread on RCU about the falcon turbine build and allot of guys have ran this engine on this airframe. Beside I like more power then what will fly this model you can all ways throttle back.
Is there anyone who lives in my area willing to help a fellow modeler??

First sounds like you have read the thread here on RCU. If you have not done so read the entire thread. I know there is a lot of post that are very good info, but take the time to read it.
Second
GET RID OF THE JJ TURBINE. It will cause you nothing but problems. I watched a brand new out of the box JJ burn up a friends plane.
Good luck

RE: Turbine set up help
At this point I have no plans of getting rid of the JJ turbine, Just because a few folk have had bad luck does not mean that I will.
I thank you for your advise But I'm staying with what I have to work with, if I burn up this arf, no big deal not like Im dropping this in a 4k airframe. Reading through the thread a few guys ran this turbine and they didn't burn up the model so the odds are in my favor.Sorry for those who had problems but that don't make this engine bad.

RE: Turbine set up help
Im not hear to debut about the quality of a JJ turbine. Im just simply looking for a person who can lend a hand. I guess this site is not the place for help. I'm closing this thread this is a waste of time

To be fair all he has done is ask for help and he has received several comments just slagging off his engine, with no real constructive criticism.
I think the OPs responses have been quite justified in the circumstances.

the best advice I could is set this engine up on a test stand if it starts get use to how it starts before putting it in a plane the one I had would hot start every time no matter how it was set up

RE: Turbine set up help
Yes run the turbine on a simple test stand and get used to how it starts! is it propane start? Then do a fuel line purge to get all of the air out of the fuel line and filter. Do this with the line disconnected from the turbine! Then dial in just the right amount of propane to so the ECU sees enough heat increase to enable "fuel ramp", then the ecu will rapidly increase the rpm until the turbine is in full auto. Resist using too much propane as this might overheat the turbine wheel or the NGV and may cause them to rub. On all ECU's that I use...full auto run is achieved when the green (or whatever) ECU led goes out. Also this is displayed on the GSU as well. If it is a Kero start, then carefully purge the fuel lines with them disconnected from the turbine, then connect them and just "bump" the pump so fuel is seen going into the turbine but do NOT put any extra in as this will cause a flaming start. Doing all of this will teach you a lot about your turbine and you will have much more confidence when you fly it the first time...
good luck
P.S On my propane start turbines I usually use "Coleman Powermax"... they seem to start better but propane also works
it is mandatory if you use powermax that you hold the can upside down so only gas goes into the start curcuit. This is the opposite
of using propane where that can must sit upright...<br type="_moz" />

Toys,
I do not live in CA. but I can help you. I currently have a JJ1800
that will go in a Formost 150 when I build it. My first Falcon 120
had a Ram 750 (17 lbs thrust) and it did not self destruct. I have
flown the Falcon 120 with a Simjet 2300 (25 lbs), but you must
reinforce the wing, wing tube, and fus. The landing gear blocks
will not last beyond several landings if they are not beefed up.
What ECU and fuel pump do you have?" Can" the test bench, and
use the plane, minus the booms and horizontal stab, to train yourself
on operation of the system. Email me direct or PM and I will give
you my phone #, so you can get any information you need to
make this a go, safely.

RE: Turbine set up help
First thing put the engine on the bench and do some starts with it, I now I have done it also, you will be very nervous on only starting the turbine.
Keep doing some starts till you feel comftable starting the engine.
I still have a ram 500 on the bench to start when I want to smell some jet fuel, just like the way the engine starts.

Toys,
You are leaving the booms and elevator/horizonal stab off the plane so if there is any
problem starting the engine, such as hot start, or the engine misfires, the booms and the
elevator will not be destroyed. The test bench way is the best, but if you want to save
time, but still get the experience of learing the system, you use the plane body. The first
time is scary, and you can make a lot of mistakes, that will burn your plane up, or
cook the engine. Remember, these are not toys.

RE: Turbine set up help
I have to say that the OP has received far less help than he should have done. He has a JJ and wants to try it so people should respect this and perhaps give what help they can.
For my part I have a Falcon 120 and I have done a complete build thread on RC Groups which is here if you are interested

where do you need to re-enforce the wing?
did you use the tail booms?
where do you get the adapter valve to charge the propane?
