Default Wren54 Sabre

Date: Jan 1, 2004. Weather was a nice 69 degrees, clear Carolina blue skies, 1-2 mile per hour winds. 10,000 Ft runway. The day has finally come. Taxi out, flaps down, set brakes, spool her up, release brakes and away we go. Gentle climb out, couple of clicks right ale, one click down trim and everything is grovey. What an exhilerating feeling and sound. My first turbine flight.

For anyone interested, the Wren 54 is a very good match for this airframe(BVM F86).

I have a small video, how do you post it?

Keith

congrats man!!!glad everything went smooth as silk for you.I am putting a Wren54 in my YA F18 single. They are sweet little motors w.o a doubt.Joey has one in his Roo-flies his 20 lb roo just fine @ a perfect speed for a first turbine. So with that in mind it should haul the mail in a F18 @ 13-14 lbs.Again glad to hear all your hard work payed off so well for you, when you guys gonna come fly with us again?

That's great Everyone needs a 10K runway and essentially no wind for their first flight; it just does not get any better - I'm jealous. Congratulations!!

I have flown a few BVM Sabres over the years, all of which were fans. This was the smoooooothest flying Sabre ever. Rock steady and not one hint of a "Sabre Dance". Now time to get started on mine.

You guys gonna make Fentress this year ? Since you guys missed it last year Last year was the first time that BV didnt attend. He got a lil' upset with me the year before last I think cause I brought my dog out(4 year old english pitbull named Chazen) BV was all scrambling around trying to round his 2 dogs up LOL.Glen robinson kneeled down to try pet my pitt & he jumped at him-was going for a neck job.Needless to say I dont bring the ole mutt to the event anymore-all those people make him a lil' on edge I think

Steve,
Yes will will come again, if 1- we remember to get reservations early enough, and 2- can locate a hotel that is not gouging prices due to the MEMORIAL DAY HOLIDAY.
PS. Leave the muts at home, trust me, you CAN'T AFFORD it if that thing attacks someone.

Kieth,

What method did you use for the panel lines and rivets? They look great.

Tim, Thanks. Panel lines and rivets are per the usual. I use a drafting pen and ink with a .50 tip. All rivets are from ProMark. This time I used the "large" size rivets as opposed to the medium and I was pleased with the overall look.

Steve, you guys crack me up. Yea we will be back. Now that I don't have to hear "When you gonna get a turbine" anymore. Last year I had another offer I could not pass up for the same weekend. A client offered tickets to the 600 in Charlotte in the Hospitality tent for Home Depot and Tony Steward. Wife and I had a great time but I still missed the flying.

Anthony,

Good deal hope to see you guys this year!!.We had a blast last year as usual,we had our yearly "traditional Fentress cookout" after the event late at night. Also a good time for all our women to unite & shoot the goship while the guys talk jets & exchange memories, etc. .Then you cant forget about the ole' fentress navy crew joining us as we get their salty dog Navy stories & they talk about the Fentress ghosts that roam the base to this day.Fentress was built/established back in WW II & supposedly they have had sightings on the base & little unexplained occurances here & there LOL

I believe in ghosts in some respects, who else does? Just as long as they dont mean any harm & just wish to watch over us they dont bother me at all.

Keith,

You havent or wont hear that from me LOL.Hell I am not flying turbines yet either.I plan to be in mine by the rally tho.I had a Roo that was gonna be my first turbine jet but have since parted ways with that & obtained a Bobcat XL that I got ARTF.That was my XMAS present from my mom then my dad got me a 500.00 hobby shop gift cert. that allowed me to get JR 8611's,8411's & a JR 450 gyro. I also have a YA F18 single I am just about done with that will be getting a Wren.I am trying to get a maiden on my newly acquired Aggressor II but doesnt look like the weather gods are gonna work with us this coming weekend. They are calling for a high of upper 30's all weekend. BURRRRRR [X(]

Flanker, Abosultely no problems using the full bypass. It is the only way I would consider. The bypass makes for a very clean, professional installation and certainly helps protect all internal airframe components. There's lots of room in the Sabre fuse as the enclosed photo shows. I would however, strongly recommend using the on board starter motor. I did find it difficult to postion the starter wand that comes with the kit into and out of the bypass. For an outside the airframe installation the starter wand works fine. The starter motor simply bolts onto the front case with three small bolts. I put a Tamiya connection on my and use a six cell pack connected to a momentary on-off button in a small ground support box (Radio Shack). Simply plug in, push the motor starter button and the process begins.

I can confirm that there is no problem with fully ducted installation, as has been said.
The other thing to consider is drag, the full ducting considerably reduces drag from the airframe.
Jason flys a BVM Sabre with the new test Wren Supersport 54 turbine, fully ducted, with 18lbs of thrust.....ballistic!

Thanks for the info on the full ducting. The reason I ask is that on other threads, Larry Wolfe has stated that Wren suggests not going with fully ducted installations with the MW-54. Others have also talked with Wren confirming their suggestion.

Technically, it doesn't make sense to me. A well-engineered duct like BVM's should work great. I don't buy the argument for a plenum inlet--it's just so draggy!

Glad to hear you've had success with the Sabre/MW-54 combo. I'm contemplating a Wren purchase for my Cermark MB-339, but as soon as that's done I'll want to get going on a building project. I've always wanted a BVM Sabre, and the Wren seems like a great fit for it. I've also had my eye on the Avonds F-104 for a long time.

I have a Wren MW54 Supersport prototype and have it fittted in a BVM F86 Sabre in a BVM RAM 500 bypass fully ducted instalation and it is perfect. The reason Wren may have said not to fit the engine in a fully ducted instalation is maybe because when this engine was fitted in my sabre 10 months ago it was shuting down at idle and was originaly thought to be a ducting problem, but the problem was later traced to the normally brilliant Hausal fuel pump ( the same one as simjet, jetcat, RAM and many other engines use).Once the pump was replaced it has never stopped and has now logged well over 100 flights and over 12 hours run time. This plane seems faster than my P120 powered S/Bandit with this instalation. My sabre has the standard 1.7L plus the U.A.T and I normaly call landing on 7 mins, land on 8mins and there is enough fuel for a few go arounds and with economy like that and 18LB thrust this engine should be well sort after when its available later this yr.
