OK, these motors just don't last - now what
I work at home so I have had a lot of opportunity to fly this dragonfly heli since new year. I have probably flown it every day, at least 4-6 750 mah batpacks. Seems like the 270 motor lasts about 2 weeks under that scenario. I have heat sinks. So that is about 12 hours of flight time before the main motor starts to loose power erratically, dropping down with the nose swinging right, or just erratic power requiring lots of rudder adjustments. Flight time also drops dramatically (red light on mixer comes on after a couple of minutes).
I will check that the pinion is still on there solidly. I'm pretty sure it is.
Can I get a brushless motor and use the same speed control/mixer board or do I need to replace the the electronics.
I have the seperate speed control/mixer and gw03 gyro setup.
Thanks for the help.
I like the 270 stock motor when it is working right.

Here's a motor that works awesome!!! The only thing you have to do is retap the mount holes (or find a screw that fits them)

I saw one of your posts on a previous questions. Is this for real? I guess you just use these and chuck them which I what I'm doing anyway. Did you solder a capacitor across the motor terminals like on the stock motor?

Before each flying session spray WD40 into the brush release holes on the rear of the motor. Be generous. This lubricates the bushings and the brushes, and I have found realy extends the life of these little motors

Yeah I took the caps off the old motor. Works great. The funniest thing is: I ordered 8 motors for $4, and the shipping was $6!! They ship real fast I ordered mine Wednesday night, and got them Saturday.

I can't take credit for it. mpj220 on runryder.com first brought it to my attention. I just want everyone to know where the best stuff for your money is. Those motors rock, and they have a lot of other useful stuff as well.

Hi
First of all.. I assume DF Stock tail motor is CN10-Plus. If anyone has the correct brand and model, plz let me know.
Ok..
By looking at the spec, the Johnson Motor might be too under voltage rating and spin slower than the stock motor. (Its rating is 1.5 to 3V. Your batteries is 8.4Volt or higher)With that, it may even easily damage. Are u running in Direct Drive? Anyway, since u said it is damn cheap, think some of u don't mind keep on replacing it once in the while.
BTW... U need the capacitor to extend the motor life a bit. Without the capacitor, u will see more sparks coming out at the brush.

"these are the tail motors right. Not the main motors"
no these are the main motor. They fit perfectly with the only mod needed is retapping the holes to accept a 3mm screw (you can try to find a screw that fits the original, but its really small, and I couldn't find one)

Hi jerbo6iks
if you said it is for main motor and the voltage rating is 6v then it should be ok EXCEPT that the RPM is way too low. I think u need higher teeth or bigger pinion. I wonder how is the torque?

Good question. I would love to see a detailed spec sheet on the stock 270 motor and one of these Johnson motors for comparison purposes. Torque and power vs RPM at a given voltage would be great. Doubt I'll find one though.

It has more torque and more rpm than the 280 and the 370. I have run it with a 9t 10t and 11t pinions( with a 2cell lipo), and found the 9t to give the best results.
I don't know why you guys are having such a hard time believing that this motor is better than the 280 and 370. You know those motors are junk, but if you want to keep spending $15+ on crap go right ahead. I just thought that maybe you would like to save 3000% on something that is 30 times better.

I bought 10 last night. Nothing ventured nothing gained and it costs next to nothing. I now have 2 sets of capacitors for main motors from the degraded motors so I'll just transfer them to one of these motors. I have only stock pinions 10t pinions. Think the 10t are ok for normal indoor flying?

darkside,
First, thanks for sharing the info. We're all creative and adventurous poor guys out here :-)
I know people have said this one or twice already...That motor really works as a main rotor motor huh??
I'll be damed.
looks like it draws less power, and looks lighter than the 270's. I think those johnson motors have the "finger" brushes and not the carbon brushes. Probably wears out alot quicker than the stocks, but for pennies a motor, who cares...
So do you get pretty good run times then?...and how is the lift and reserve powers? (comparing to stock motors)

I have always limited my flights to ten minutes, because I don't want to discharge the lipos too far. The power is always there and these motors will last a lot longer than the 280, and 370 motors. The guy who first informed me about these motors says he has about 20hrs on one and it's still going strong. Here's a link to where I first learned about the motor:

RE: OK, these motors just don't last - now what
Hi all
I think most of us doesn't trust it because it looks soooooo like stock tail motor. The RPM and wattage rating are low. Well come on! How do we accept Low wattage has higher torque than those 370 or anything.
One possible explaination to this is:
1 - It looks light to me.. so u need lesser power to lift.
2 - Because you overdriving the motor with high voltage and current. Therefore the torque also increase BUT u will surely kill the brushes (You also said that it is finger brush.... not carbon brush)
To those who tried it, tell us how long will it last before u replace it? (If possible the total runtime..like mileage)

To those who own that motor, plz give us some marking/model/serial or anything so we can find the spec.
Thank you

Go spend your $15 on a century 370. I obviously don't know what I'm talking about. Did you even look at the link I've posted?

Hi darkside212
If you refering to this link:
http://www.allelectronics.com/cgi-bi...189&type=store
Yup. I read it. I'm asking whether can someone who bought this motor give us some information/marking/serial on that motor to us.
I want to find spec from the JohnsonMotor itself... not from those supplier.

their site is pretty cool. They have detailed spec sheets on the motors. Charts as a function of speed and things like that. http://www.johnsonelectric.com

Alright... how 'bout this for a tail motor? Anyone know if this is a standard size?
