in search of the true .40 size sports plane
My poor OS 40 LA, once again it has been pulled from a .40 size plane I installed it in only to be replaced by a more poweful .46 BB engine. What are some good sport flying planes that will make this engine shine. I don't mean trainers but full acrobatic planes. The one I have in mind is the Sportsman Aviation Hot Knife profile, only thing is that it's on backorder at Hobby People. Another is the TT Bipe 40 but I question it's acrobatic abilities. Are these good choices and can anyone think of others that may suit this engine.

The Tower Kaos 40 ARF would be a very excellent choice. It’s light, doesn’t look like all the other look-a-like ARFs and at $110. it’s very cheap but as AFS go, it's a good ARF. It flies fine with a 40 to 46. It has the requisite tricycle gear too. I have one with a 53 on it and it is like a rocket.

A 43" Sig Smith Miniplane bipe flies pretty well on a 40 LA. So does a Hobbico Avistar, & it's very aerobatic despite looking like a trainer.

No doubt a .40 LA will fly a Twist but that power plant would be at the bottom. I have an OS .46 AX in mine and it flies nicely. Alot of flyers have a .72 size 4 stroker in them.

Don't waste your time trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. That is a trainer engine and if you don't want to put it on a trainer sell it to someone who does. You can put it on an aerobat but you'll probably have an underpowered .40 aerobat or a nose heavy .25 size aerobat.
I'd build a Kadet Senior and cover it in silkspan. Keep it for windy days and when you want to teach a friend to fly. It'll be a classic trainer that will be around for a long time.

I'd rather buy a cheap plane that will fly good with this engine than sell (give) the thing away. I bought the engine new after I started flying my first trainer without any real knowledge about bushings, bearings and .46 size engines. I thought they were pretty much all the same with slight differences and the result is a brand new engine just barely broke in. I still feel that there has to be planes out there that fly very well with this engine. One that I ran across today at the HS is the World Models Rambler 30. Does anyone have any thoughts on this plane?

The Rambler 30 will fly very well with an LA 40. I had one with a Saito 45 4-stroke in it and it was a great sport plane. World also makes a Happy Fly that will offer outstanding performance with the LA in it.
Basin Bum: The LA 40 weighs the same as a 32 FX. Perfect for any 25 or 30 size airplane. And no, it won't fly like a Wild Hare with a DA 50 in it.

I would suggest the Tower Uproar. Flying mine (kit) with a .32SX so it should fly well with a .40LA. I would not recommend the Kaos for that engine tho. Would be underpowered. The Kaos needs at least a .40 ball bearinged engine. I fly mine (kit again) with a Super Tigre .51 and it screams. With a .40LA it wouldnt be any fun. Definitely would be a waste of that plane anyway.

Thanks Fubar I will add it to my list, I also noticed a couple of other .30 size planes that World Models sells. A .30 size Ultimate Bipe and a .30 Extra in two different color schemes all for around $150. I have owned a couple of World Models that I liked very much and I currently am flying the .60 Super Emeraude. I think these two planes and the Rambler .30 I mentioned earlier are now at the top of my list. I did look at the TT bipe today at the HS and I think it might be a little heavy for the .40.

I have been running an OS 40 LA in a ModelTech Magic and it works very well. The Magic comes as an ARF for $99.99. It is easy to put together although the radio, battery compartment is a little cramped.
Aerobatics are a cinch even with the 40 size engine. I have been using an 11X5 or 12X4 prop to get better pulling power. It is not a fast airplane. The Magic stays very steady throughout all aerobatic maneuvers, loops, rolls, inverted flight and it will slow way down for landings. There also is a magic extra that I have heard good reports on but have not flown.

speaking of 25 size planes, I have 3 old OS 25 size engines from years ago. I have a 25 FSR, 25 FSR ABC and a 28 FSR. All three of these were runners and incredibly reliable. I wouldn't mind finding something fun to put these in...how about a smaller lighter profile? I think the 40 LA is comparable to these...I used to pull around a 40 size Sterling Fledgling even doing aerobatics with the 25 FSR ABC.

I would think that the four * forty would be a good match for that engine. It flies like a trainer but will handle aerobatics also.

I have a "Stangel Technologies" Skylark 40 that is almost overpowered with a 40 FP, so your LA would do it up just fine. The plane comes as "wood only" kit, has a 48" wingspan and can probably be built in 4-5 days (not the weekend as advertised). It is not the prettiest thing on the ground, but it flies real nice (terrific knife-edge) and fits assembled in the backseat of my convertible, a real plus on those days when I don't want to choose between open air driving and lunchtime flying. There is a picture of mine in my photo gallery.

That is a fun plane to play with! Mine is powered with an OS .46AX. I generally fly it at less than half throttle since its not supposed to be a fast plane. If I had known it would fly fine with a .40LA I would have used my old workhorse .46LA instead of buying the AX for it.
Oh well, it is kinda neat launching it straight up from my hand at full throttle!

well gnirwin, it was a rocket ship, looked very stable, done huge loops, fast rolls (nice and axle by memory).

The local HS doesn't have any of the WM Extras in stock but they can order one. They do have a World Models Rambler .30 on sale for $90.00. They had a couple left at this price and if they still have one left when I get paid next week this will be my next plane.
