HL Smoke System
Hey all
I just did some work on the smoke system. I thought that my stock smoker had died on me so I order two more from Mato, got them on Friday and put one in on Sunday after adding some oil I fired it up but got no smoke.[:@]
Being that I like to find out how things tick i cut open my old smoker to see if the element was burned out. I plugged it into the tank and turned it on, and smoke all kinds of smoke off of it.
It seems the they add some extra batting to the oil chamber which makes it hard of the smoke to get out. I removed the batting and left only the wick, then put the smoker back together. Now I get pretty good smoke.

I was asking Killhammer the question, he said "Extra batting in the oil chamber" I was questioning his meaning of batting?
Batting is a baseball term..
Baffling would be compartments in the smoker..
See where I am going with this?

It was like stuffing use find in a pillow. I should have took some pictures. The oil tank is like a box then on the inside is the element with the wick wrapped around, the rest of the space was filled with some kind of cotton or something. I removed the cotton and left only the wick.

Wanting to know this too. Just how hard was it to get apart and reassemble? Did you use glue to reassemble it? Seems that you'd have to degrease the unit so glue would adhere to the parts--seems like an undertaking.

Getting the unit apart depends on how well it was glued together in the first place. I used a straight razor to cut the oil tank open, then cleaned it with alcohol. Then i just slid it back together and used some rubbery stuff called Shoe Goo ( found At K-mart or Wal-mart) to seal the tank. I will post some picture this evening.

I just wonder what the long term impact will be?

Here are some pictures of the smoke unit. The yellowish or gold color material is the batting I was talking about. I used the shoe goo to seal it, it drys pretty fast but dose on get hard. I have ran the system for a pretty good time on Sunday, Monday and, today it still going strong....

I have noticed on mine if I over fill it, to turn the tank straight up and blow into one of the tubes to get the extra out...
Then run the crap out of the tank a few times(battery charges) and it should start smoking again..
I did this tonight and it's smoking again!

The German RC-Panzerketten site has some threads about this exact mod where a HL owner removed the extra batting and restored the smoker to proper function. It seems the batting is a universal problem as it chokes the unit up.
I like the idea of keeping the smoke unit reservoir but replacing the piston mechanism with a 1 1/2" PC "box fan".

Hi guys
Just a question that might be stupid but I am more of a modeller than an RC person - I am new to RC and still learning. Would it be possible to rig the fan(s) onto the drive motors so the more throttle you give the more the fans pump. It would be more like the real thing then as the faster the engine turns the more exhaust fumes are chucked out.

Anything is possible! You'd have to add a gear somewhere to the gearbox and a driveshaft to the fan. The fan could be located near the gearbox with a hollow tube going to the smoke unit, or the driveshaft going aft (presuming a Tiger) to the fan.

The only problem I see with using a fan that is hooked to the gear box is when you place the tank in reverse..the fan will suck the smoke into the tank..

Sorry. Did not make myself clear I think. I meant just take the current from the motors to the electric fan. It should be easy to rig something to stop the fan going in reverse - hopefully.
