RE: Whats your Average Engine Temp?
It won't let me either. But fro me it's 270-350. I don't really care what the temp is at. Because it's a traxxas engine, and I just need to finish the last of this gallon I have then I am putting in my os!!!!

RE: Whats your Average Engine Temp?
I didnt vote for several questions. For one I dont take temps, and I never took an engine temp. For another thing it doesnt matter what others run there engine temps at as there are thousand of variables that might make one temp better for one engine then that exact same temp good for you at any one certain time. And for another I dont think temps really matter as long as the engine does not have a problem and the engine is not running lean or overly rich.
Thats why I didnt vote, and nobody should really care about what others are running witht there engine's as once again to many variables for anyone's certain temps to matter to anybody else.

125cchyperman ... i totally agree with you.
and i do not intend to run my Engine at the average temp voted for here, and i will still stick to tunning for preformance and not temprature, i just "as i said" wanted to have an idea what temps are most people running at, thats all.

I can have several different engines running at the same time and not a one of them will be the same. Even if I were to average them all togeather and try to tune another engine to that temp it's likely that engine would not be running anywhere near to it's optimum performance. Also you are not taking into account tuning difference between different people and locations - properly tuned engines will have vastly different temps in Saudi Arabia compared to, say, Toronto. And the obvious lack of care that some people exhibit towards their engines by running them extremely hot or cold skews the poll as well. Finally, even saying there is an "average" temp could encourage the inexperienced to try to tune hotter than their engines should be and cause damage or shortened engine life.
If you want to learn how to tune a nitro engine well then put the temp gun away and watch and listen to your engine, it will tell you when it's tuned properly - a temp guage will NOT tell you when an engine is tuned.

RE: Whats your Average Engine Temp?
I think most agree, temp guns are a waste of money and time. I tune for performance/sound and the only engine that ever blew on me was my very first AE .12, which I kept just under 270 because that's what I heard was a safe temp. Think again. After that one, I learned how to do it right and tossed the temp gun. Chasing temps is too dangerous to your engine and your sanity.

I don't agree with you guys saying temp guns are a waste of money...One day my dad broke out the REVO after it'd been sitting in the garage for a couple months, started it up, and it ran fine, so he didn't even bother to tune it. Later, it locked up and died...We brought it back, and the spur was melted, so we checked the temp, it was over 400*...After tearing it down he also found that the heat had melted the EZ-start gears. Moral to the story is, ALWAYS check your temps.

I'm not trying to flame on you or your dad at all. I understand that the excitement and fun of getting an old friend running again can be distracting but anytime a nitro engine is stored and then gotten out again it should, at the very least, be checked after a minute or so of running. 400 degrees, way less than that really, would be very easy to notice had the truck been brought back in and given a quick once over.
Besides, I never said that a temp gun did not have it's place in a tool box. It's just not the be-all and end-all of tuning that many people think it is. If you try to tune to a specific temp then you are not properly tuning the engine. You may be getting close to the best tune but close is all that you can get. Like I did say before, a temp gun will not tell you when an engine is properly tuned, only the engine can do that.

RE: Whats your Average Engine Temp?
My 2.5 runs 270- 300. If I try to richen it up it bogs like hell. I just bought this temp gauge to get an idea what temp my motor runs at. Seems to run better at the higher temp. Has a nice blue smoke trail, tons of power and idles fine. Go figure !!!
