I use marvel air tool oil for long term storage. Heard bad things about regular marvel mystery oil as after run.

What kind of bad things? I have not heard of anything bad and it was recommended by several members of the club I used to belong to. I have not been in the hobby for very long though - only about 3 years.
I know some guys never use after run oil at all, but I am curious as to what you have heard.

Thanks.

Regular Marvel Mystery Oil used in a motor for long term storage will turn to a cement like substance that is a real pain to get out of the motor. Used for a daily A.R.O. it is probably all right. The bad thing about it is it is a petroleum product and can make that first start of the day more effort then it needs to be.The advantage of Marvel air tool oil is that it displaces water completely, it never solidifies, and if used in conjunction with Rizlone can store a motor for 20 years and still beloose and free of rust.

Lets seem if I can shake loose that brain cell. Seems I remember something about it being hygoscopic (retains water). Hopefully somebody smarter than I can chime in with the details. I just cant remember all the details that far back. The marvel air-tool oil is what I use. If I store an engine longer than 6 months I'll lube it up good through the carb, into the glowplug hole, crank case breather on a 4-stroke and down the pushrod tubes. Sorry I dont have more info, been doing it this way for many years and dont really give it that much thought anymore.

Someone told me that the A.R.O. is nothing more than OTS transmission fluid, is that true?

Any air tool oil (including Marvel Mystrey Air tool oil) is much better than Marvel Mystry oil. also Rislone (in the yellow container) and ATF are much better for use as after run oil than Marvel Mistery Oil as it has no water protection at all. To be effective, you must use more than a few drops of after run oil in a motor, especially 4 strokes. It takes about a teaspoon full each time to give effective protection. Rislone and ATF are inexpensive enough to not worry about how much you are using and do as good or better a job than those oils marketed as after run oils.

I just make sure to run the engines often (weekly or more frequently) an skip the ARO.

I tried using MMO and it affected my glow plug. Now I don't worry about using it.

I can personally verify that regular MMO turns to crud over time. I used it liberally in an engine that got stored for ten years, it seized it up, and the bearings rusted. I use sewing machine oil - that stuff has never given me a problem.

I cut my MMO 50/50 with ATF. I got the recipe a loooooong time ago from an old modeler. I have not had any trouble with rust.

A good plan unless:

(1) You have a lot of engines.
(2) Your life is a bit unpredictable and unforseen lapses in available time occur.
(3) Both (10 and (2)

As both (1) and (2) apply in my case I use ATF or Rislone. Fuel with castor also is a big factor in rust prevention.

I too have had MMO leave a varnish-like coating over time.

Would sewing machine oil be considered somewhere in the 10 weight range?

Sewing machine oil and/or gun oil are not good after run oils.

There is a bewildering variety of gun oils on the market. Some would work quite well as ARO, but others contain various solvents, teflon and a variety of other additives that would not be good. None are as inexpensive as or more effective than ATF or Rislone.

Which one of the three yellow containers? the Engine treatment's or oil treatments?

That is the mixture Clarence Lee has recommended for years. It's what I use. I bought a quart of each many years ago. That's about two lifetime supplies!

My God I love this after run oil debate. I think it has been going on about 80 years now.

Actually I think it started in about 1934.
