Have any of you builders of the great international woody/wildthing built a hatch for this hull? I'm thinking of building one due to the performance of my last build but I don't really like the idea of having an open hull. If you have can you post some pics for ideas

never needed one so no never have but you could build one similar the the one i built for my new glass hull to fit the woody.just keep the screen and side screen and put a roof on it ,the only one ive seen with a hatch is w3bbys boat heres a pic, more a canopy than a hatch .

Mart have you run that hull with a zen in it or just the weedy engine, and what kind of speed did you get out of it?

Hi mate i havent (yet) but plenty have,the one in the pic went well over 50 mph with a zen in it,id say mid 50s is well achievable but the boat can get flighty so if your planning on running with a zen i wouldnt add strakes to the hull also anything over 55 mph and id say she could get hard to handle .Also dont worry too much about weight as extra weight isnt a bad thing especially if you plan on running a modded zen.I know webby adds weight to his when needed.You will be surprised by just how good this boat runs and she handles chop well too.i added height to mine but that was a personal preference not because of any issues with the design.speed with my weedy was over 30 mph so a zen will make it fly.

Cool, thanks I'm just not happy with the speed my first build so I started building #2 today. I'm hoping with my modded zen to keep up with my buddies running nitros maybe even beat them haha. I think I'll leave the strakes off and just do the chines on the outer edge. How far up the hull did you run your chines? I was thinking about 2/3 from the transome. Oh and I plan on adding some free board aswell due to the lake I run on, it gets pretty rough at times and I don't want to swamp it. Anyway I don't think I'll have it on the water this year snow will be flying pretty soon and it's off the the winter fun.

I gps'd mine at 53mph with a stock G231. I ran this year with a mod 260 and it appears significantly faster, but I didn't gps it so I don't know how fast it is with the mod motor. With a mod motor 55mph or better should be pretty easy. It handles very well at any speed I've run. Keeping it on the water if t is at all windy or rough can be tricky tho, it does tend to get light on the nose at speed unless the water is very flat. I would put your cg at somewhere around 34% when you set it up. Mine has now been officially retired and I am going to build a newer version for next year. Doug

Can't wait to see what you come up with Doug. I'll be running an octura 575 behind my WHH modded zen. What prop setups have you had luck with in the past, and what kind of wieght was your boat running at?

The fastest prop I've tried with both the stock 231 and the mod 260 is an ABC 3014. That prop is now at the bottom of the pond, I have to get a new one before next year. A Voodoo 6717/3 was a dog with the stock motor, but runs very well and is a great heat racing prop with the mod 260. The bare hull weighed about 5 pounds when it was built, I never weighed the completed boat. Unless your boat is really heavy I don't think weight is all that important. A pound or 2 isn't gonna make much difference and may actually help. Doug

Your right fowlmood I used some pine that I ripped down on the tablesaw so I could shape it. And yes mart if you are reffering to the chine rails they need shaping aswell.

ok mate just checking boat looks good,dont worry about weight too much these things get flighty,in fact you may need to add weight up front in windy weather with a modded zen [X(] .id do as suggested keep balance at 34% for a modded motor.

Doing a little more work now that I'm off call. Started my plug for the hatch, I plan on coating it with fiberglass and removing the foam.

Looks good what resin you planning on? if its poly just remember it eats foam ,you can cover the foam with brown paper and pva glue ive used this method before once its dry it goes very hard so it will protect the foam you can sand it smooth once its dry too just in case you decide not to glass it,in fact ive covered a whole plane with it and painted it and it worked great .It would be interesting to see if it worked on a boat canopy ,it would be very lite and stronger than you think. Once painted it would be well sealed i dare you to try it .

I painted the foam with three coats of latex paint then sealed it with laquor. I got the first coat of resin and cloth on last night, just needs a little more work and it should be ready for paint

pitty id have liked to see one made from foam and paper my mustang was very strong when covered in it and even though its made from balsa its unbelievably strong.

ps for a good filler on wood i use two part wood filler its spreads nice and smooth and sands well too.

It's Evercoat Litewieght body filler, it sands real nice by the time I'm done sanding I won't have to use much spot glaze before priming.
With any luck it just might be ready for paint this weekend.
