My Hurricane 550's first Hover
I got my Hurrance 550 last week and got a chance to test over it today. Today I took it out the the garage and spooled it up and made sure everything was trimmed out. Seeing those big blades spool up is an adrenilin rush! Everything checked out fine so I took it out for a quick test hover. I hovered it at waist level for a few minites and moved it around the back yard. This thing is ROCK steady. I used a gy401 for the first time and it held the tail like it was in a vise. Its realy to cold to fly now but i am hoping we get some kind of a warm run before winter realy pours on the cold. The only down side to this Heli I see so far are the power requirerments, it runs on two packs so even with my poly 4 charger I can only charge two flights of packs at a time. The Poly 4 also only charges 3000 mah so I wont be able to use 4100 packs. I thnk I'll grab 4 3200 packs and just charge them up to 3000.

Looks nice, I'm planning on getting the 550 myself in the new year. I've got about 8 3s1p batteries so hopefully I don't have to wait too much

Druss,
Whats the mah on the batteries you have , I hear that the 2100's just arent enough. I think I'm going to order a couple of Hextronic 3200's and see if they hold up. They have them for $50 At that price I could get four or 6 if they hold up, I've used the Hextronic 2200's all year in my 450 and they have held up well.

I've got about 8 2200mah ones and 4 3500mah. most of them are 20C or 25C.
out of curiosity did you buy the version that came with servos? if not which ones did you put in?

do you find those servos underpowered at all? I'm thinking of using either the 9252 or JR 8717's. I've got an older JR 5000T gyro and a 9254 to go with it.
I have the futaba brushless BLS451 on my Trex 600N Pro and I'm thinking that I'll move them over to the hurricane and use the 8717's on the Trex.

Even though the poly-4 will only charge at 3A max, you can charge 4100MAh or 3400Mah batteries without a problem. They just take longer to charge (as long as they are no more than 3s, or can the Poly-4 handle 4s?). That's a nice looking bird!

Druss,
I just started flying Heli's this summer and wont be doing any real agressive flying for some time. I realy wont find out if they arent up to the task until next spring, winter will be closing down my flying[]

I've got a 550 and love it. It's an incredibly smooth machine, and even on the stock motor, with 25C 2250 packs, the model has remarkable punch similar to a 450 sized heli but with the stability of the larger birds. It really is quite a nice size!

The charger just limits the output to 1C based on the capacity of the pack. It will charge a 3200 Mah cell fine, but it will take more than an hour that's all. Just set your charger to 3000Mah and it will work fine (just slowly). The gross timeout is 3 hours so it should have plenty of time. These LiPo chargers charge at constant current and monitor the voltage. I have charged 2100Mah batteries with a 1A charger (it just took over two hours).
You should be fine as long as you stay under 4S.

These 450 size don't have this particular sound but a couple years ago, some guy had a big electric and sounded just like a turbine spooling up.

If you like noisy models you might get a kick out of this.

This was the very first, untrimmed flight of a Century Hawk Pro .30 that I converted to electric power last winter. Because the hawk pro has no belts (torque tube driven tail) and uses a few different gears for power transfer, the amount of noise and gear whine the model generated during flight was pretty impressive for the models relatively small size.
My EP550 is nearly silent compared to this noisy thing! Even my t-rex 600 which has more power and a larger blade area isn't as loud.

well the ep500 is... 550 size not 450, i've heard there is an electric out there the size of a .90 nitro but never seen one. the biggest i've seen is the tt e620 and trex 600e and they are plenty loud enough.

Ya there is, it's called a Raptor 90 with E conversion. A few ppl have done it, but it's really not worth it.

RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover
Found a delivery notice on my door from USPS. They tried to deliver my 550 Staurday but I wasen't home :-( Gave them a call at 8am this morning and they are holding the package. I'm leaving now to go pick it up :-)
With all the rave reviews I have read I can't wait to get started on this bird!

RE: My Hurricane 550's first Hover
I'm already saving for one of these, i should really sell one of my 450's too but I like them all... the 550 is definitely a better deal than the trex 500 which was my other choice (once it comes out)
