Default Small tachometer for a nitro?

Does anyone know of anywhere you can buy a small tachometer setup that would work or is made for a nitro truck. I would have it mounted on the truck and it would need to have a recall for the highest RPM reached during a run. Im not sure if anyone makes something like this since im sure a magnet spinning 30k rpm on the flywheel wouldnt stay long, but figured someone might have an idea.

you could do the math if you had a speedometer... as far as a 30K tac, possible, but would require optic sensors, and would be a pretty penny to use.

The magnets would stay attached just fine as long as they're pressed into the disc.

AFAIK Don't Losi RTRs have this already? I know the DX3S has telemetry out the wazoo.

Yep, my Losi Ten-T has an integrated telemetry unit that works with the DX3S to give RPM and speed as well as temp readings on the fly.

I knew the telemetry systems did. Doubt im gonna pay that for a radio though. lol

It uses a reflective tape so it would be easy to do, i just dont think im going to spend that much. It doesent have to be anything snazzy. Id like it on my pulling truck so that i can check the max engine RPM after a run.

I may have to give this a try:

I have some space where it would fit by the engine on my pulling truck. I could build a mount that easily attatched and unattatched and put the reflective tape on my flywheel. Im not bashing with it, only recording the highest RPM of a pull to get a better idea on my wheel speed.

For the price I may have to give it a shot....

I have an inexpensive IR tach, and it does need refelctive tape (like that aluminum tape). However, I once used it to measure the rpm of a drill press and again for a metal lathe. I just wrapped electrical tape around part of the chuck. The gap left, exposed the shiny chuck surface and it worked fine.

So you might find that painting about half your flywheel black might work. Well, not really paint as it may throw the balance off, but heavy black pemanent marker might work. Or a black (or any dark colour) anodized flywheel with some of it scraped down to bright aluminum should do the trick.

These tachs work on the reflected signal and can sometimes be a little touchy depending on how they are aimed. They can also read 1/2 frequency the odd time, but it's usually due to the aim as well. Don't despair if you get some odd readings at first.

Thanks for the solid info Argess. I may try one. Im sure i can make it work. Ill just have to come up with a good solid mounting plate/bracket for it and go from there with it.

The only thing on this one i dont know about is if you have to hold a button in to get a reading or not. Im assuming you dont, but im not 100% sure.
