DLE 55 Engine Noise
My DLE55 started making a knocking noise during warm up this morning. The engine started and was running normally for about a minute when it suddenly started knocking. After tear down I found some debris in the cylinder. Good news there was no damage. I could not find where the debris came from. It is non-magnetic and looks like a piece of casting or slag. The casting of the case and jug looked great. Glad I found all this on the ground. This engine is about four years old but has low run time on it. Got it back together now ready for testing tomorrow.

Looks like fod of some kind, Is the metal lead or some other soft material? Did you have any balance weights come loose? Whatever it is, that is a pretty big chunk of material. For damage like that, be very sure the ring is loose in the ring groove on the piston. Any impact damage can pinch the ring in the groove.

Thanks Truck for the input. The debris is aluminum not lead. I checked the ring and all the parts carefully. I could not see any damage. There was no indent in the jug. The small amount of carbon deposit on top of the piston did not even show a depression and the piston looks shiny like new with no scoring. Bearings were tight. Without splitting the case I could not confirm the bottom end has any issue. Everything felt normal after reassembly. Compression feels right as well. I have followed the DLE threads for many years and have seen bearings, screws and flat washers making there way into the cylinder but never a chunk of metal like this.

I don't see any marks on the top of the piston, but whatever those pieces are, they got hammered flat somewhere/somehow....
Hard to tell for sure, but isn't that a grey stripe on the crank to the right of the crank pin?
If it were mine, I would do a complete teardown/inspection.
