Default Ideal engine thrust for the SM Bae Hawk

What thrust class engines are being currently used on the SM Hawk. The finished dry weight is estimated at around 25lbs. Should it be 18lbs or a 28lbs engine? I know it CAN BE flown with smaller ones too...but what thrust is BEST SUITED for overall performance.

Well I flew one with a Wren 54 Mk 3. For me the model looked perfectly scale. It was neither under or over powered. With a Jetcat P120 it would no doubt be a lot of fun, but way overpowered for scale. I think the absolute perfect engine would be a Wren Supersport. Same weight and physical layout as the 54 but that bit more power if you ever need it.
Regards,

John

Not mentioning Manufacturers as the original question, I've flown one with a 18 lbs thrust and a 27lb thrust and they were both the same when flying scale like. BUT it was more fun to have the extra power for certain vertical and slow / high alpha passes.

P-120 for sure. I just witnessed the maiden of one powered by a Titan and it's waaaaay too much, even the owner made the same comment. Flies great by the way.

I have flown this model with turbines ranging from 16lbs of thrust right up to 30. I have to admit that I had the most fun with the P-120. It flys just as scale with a more powerful turbine, it just means you use the throttle stick more frequently. I did fly it with the Supersport and although it flew it and it was very light to fly, oh and it flew for 20 mins on a tank I did not really like it. It always felt like it wanted 10% more. In retrospect i think a full bypass would have made this difference. But in the end I went back to the old trusty 120. Takeoff at half power (for scale) then cruise at half or just under. Aeros at 3/4 and slowflight to vertical with full power ..... Oh Yes!
The turbine was not working it's nuts off and fuel lasted ages.

Hi Ali,

Thanks for your experiences with different engines. The planes I test flew were of friends but I liked it so much, I got one as well. Here is a preview picture of it as it is being pained. It is not exactly scale but I wanted it this way. I like it better than the scale picture in the background. this will be getting a 27lb engine to have fun with.

Thanks - Adil

Adil You stole my idea
I was thinking exactly the same thing. The idea behind the real hawk/dragon combo was great. Just a shame they let the c=local junior school apply the art work.
Yours is looking great even now so when its done I am sure it will be just as stunning as your other jets

Exactly

Well - good looking planes is one thing, I just need to get my flying skills up to par (somewhere between mine[] and YOUR level) and then I'll be happy.

I'll post some more pictures when its done.

Adil

I have wanted to try this Hawk with the Jet Central Falcon engine, 22lbs thrust, 3lbs weight and somewhere in between the SS and 120 in frontal area/diameter.

I've heard and seen so many people praise the flying qualities of this version of the Hawk.

Rob.

Sounds like a spot on choice Rob.
Adil So what you are trying to say is that your flying dosent need much if any improvment then Keep me updated when you get that Hawk finished. I would love to add it to my gallery.
