i have been anting a small electric heli recently. i have never flown any heli but i am getting the itch. how bad of an idea is it to start with one of these? i don't really have a lot of money to buy a trainer first and then buy the electric so this is my only choice for a while. what do you guys think?

get the LMH 120, it's much stronger, or at least the 110's are and they are nitro power, but the 120 is elec. and should be just as strong if not stronger then the 110..

My Opinion: Bad idea. Save your money. The Piccolo/Hornet sized heli's are harder to fly and harder to set up. Your chances of succeeding to fly it prior to bashing it all over your house is very low.

Corona is a better choice.

I agree with edg, I started with an lmh 110, then got a piccolo, then shuttle, Hawk III, a few hornets, and now I'm down to a Hawk III and a cp hornet, I let a few people that fly the bigger machines fly my hornet, they can't even hold a stable hover. I can land in somebodys hand (not safe) but I have had alot of pratice and have studied heli's all my life, real and rc. my advice would be to get an lmh, I heard the Carona is good but haven't had the chance to try it out. good luck. also, you would spend alot less time and effort getting the lmh to fly rather than a hornet.

Step 1. Get a good sim(RealFlight G2) and start practicing daily to develop the motor skils you'll need for the heli.
Step 2. Buy a Corona.
Step 3. Have fun!

I had only been flying fixed wings until january 2002. Then I bought my first heli, the MS Hornet. I built it and set it up, which was quite easy. MS homepage has great photos on the job! I called my rc club to get the chopper guys to help me flying. No one wanted to get involved with this little thing. They told me about all the difficulties.......but, if you see the possibilities and not focus on the limitations it all gets easier. I had to do it all on my own. First I used FS2002 simultor and flew different choppers from tower view. This helped me learning to coordinate and organizing my mind.With a couple of carbontubes as a training gear I started training. Today,one year later, I fly the chopper controlled. I am not a hot shot and keep within 10 meter range. I will get an experienced assistant when I start going from hoverflying to actually flying. The thing is little and fast.... But, I did it,even though all the experienced guys told me to get a bigger,more stable chopper. Don't be afraid.
I include a photo with my Hornet and a little 11g camera mounted on its side. I use my laptop as a monitor.

I never said it can't be done with a hornet. Heck the CP hornet was my second heli from the Corona.

What is good about the Corona is that it is so rugged. If you tip it over, you just set it up straighten everything and fly again.

With the hornet if you tip it over (at least on my CP) you are buying parts, period.

The only drawback to the Corona is that it doesn't feel real precise. It feels kind of rubbery on the sticks but you get used to it.

Sure, learning on a Hornet or Piccolo as a first helicopter CAN be done. Certainly people do it all the time.

My contention is that the CHANCES you will succeed in learning to fly an R/C helicopter is FAR LOWER with a micro than with something bigger.

The XRB mini Lama is not a bad way to go either.

Wouldn't try it without the Sim first, though.

My first was a Corona and then I bought a Piccolo. The Corona is way easier to fly. I luv'em both though.

A simulator is probably the cheapest and least painful method...
I haven't upgraded my Hornet to CP standard yet. Is it a lot of work? How different will its performance be?

I never flew mine as FP so I can't compare.

From talking to other people, though I don't go through pinions like other people.

It took me about an hour to put the head together.

Just another vote for LMH. My first sucessful flight was with a 110 but Corona should be just as durable.
I went through a Cricket then a Kalt Whisper before I got it right. I would have had a much faster turn-around with Corona as my first bird.

EP Concept Sr canopy from Tower works well especially with Voyager-E LG. Also the Kyosho EP Concept Hughes 300 and Hughes 500 as well as Bell Jet Ranger are the right size. Hornet Canopies are way to small (out of scale so to speak)The EP Cocept scale fuselages are hard to find, but I have an extra or two that I would be willing to part with for the right price. There is also a thread by darthdrk who is bringing some plastic semi-scale fuselages to market. Another source is at www.rc-city.de in Germany. Contact Volker Desinger there. Do a little pick and shovel web work with "Google.com" and you will probably find others as well as search results here.
