Matt - just two oddball days out of many very good ones. Unusual to have that kind of traffic on the lakebed but it does happen. Chuck usually gets to them before they do much (he now has a silver Dodge pickup) or we take care of it ourselves. We have more trouble with the ones who come out there thinking there are no rules and fly over, behind, in or around the pits and think it's not only OK but a demonstration of skill.

The full size runway is fine. The model runway is fine, but there is some fine dust. Most of the rutting has been fixed by the rain over the winter. If you pit about 100 yards west of the rock circle that marks where the wind sock used to be, you'll be in the best area for jets.

I just came back from out there. A bit of wind, maybe 10 mph, and the bugs were not a problem. You guys have fun, I'll be over in Lancaster at the Tailwinds working the Aero Design West competition for the college kids.

Have you guys thought about starting an club at Rabbit?

With what is happening at the basin, I think we all might need it

There is a loose (very loose) federation out there called the High Desert Flyers Association. It was put together several years ago by Dan Egelhauf (Teamerica, Race 96) to put a stop to the clubs that kept coming up from LA to have a fun fly and then charge us money to fly at our own field that weekend. Most of that crap has gone away. We still get clubs/groups once or twice a year that just come in mass for a weekend. In recent years, it's been mostly the giant scale racers for test flying or the jet crowd passing through although there are others. No problem, people are always welcome to come fly. Everybody there seems to like to watch the jet set fly. But, occasionally, some of the visitors forget their flying manners (see post above) and cause some problems.

TonyF is right, there is no formal frequency control system out there. Can't seem to get anybody to put it together. You can't leave it out there, else it will be gone by the next weekend. Even locked sealand containers won't last. So we need several portable setups as it's a different set of fliers day to day typically.

You can occasionally fly as a guest, but club membership is only $25 or $30. Pretty good deal.

$30 a year is a bargain to fly at that field! I thought you had to work for Edward's AFB to fly there.

You don't have to have base affiliations to be a member at MMM. Th runway is a little rough on the right side, some spots to avoid. But there is a ton of area that is very smooth, absolutely plenty of space to fly. The field is just north of Lancaster. Mt home is about 3 miles from the field, it takes me an hour and 20 or so to get to the basin.

Bob, as for Rabbit there was only five of us flying yesterday and four were jets and everybody had their own personal channels.

Hello all,
Has anyone flown to Rabbit in a full size? An earlier thread said the runway is good. Who owns the airstrip? Private or government? Is there a contact I can get in touch with?
I was thinking of going out there this Saturday, 6-14 (wx permitting) to check it out and hopefully there will be some nice rc planes there...

How were the bugs for you guys ??

The full size airfield is within the fenced area just north of the highway. Use the E-W runway and fly the pattern on the south side. Privately owned locally but I don't have contact info. You have to cross a barbed wire fence on the north side to get to the R/C area. Can't predict who will be there with what.

Rick the bugs were not a problem, in fact, I only saw five of them the whole day. Also the wind was pretty constant all day and gusts up to 20 mph. All in all a very nice day.

Thanks for the info. Airnav lists the runways as 8/26 with traffic patterns to the south. Right for 8 and Left for 26. I imagine the wind favors 26 most of the time? Any ties available--I bring tie downs but usually not stakes. How close (in yards?) would you say the airstrip is from the model airstrip? Am curious about landing while others are flying their models...

No tiedowns. 100 feet and on problem landing while models
are flying. try not to land on the first 1/3 of runway it is a little

Hello all,
We flew in to Rabbit Ranch today. Landed on the RC runway instead. Worked out really well. There were a few people there. Nice bunch of guys. Only prop driven planes, though, no jets today. Looking forward to going back. This time we'll take chairs, more planes, etc. Thanks for the info.
