newbie needs help with tuning motor
just got a revo...trying to get it tuned. couple of questions to get started....when your vehicle (mine is a revo 3.3) is idling if you pick it up off the ground does it start free wheeling pretty fast? mine does at the present time...but my tune is off.
does the motor running while the vehicle is upside down aid in fowling the glow plug?
ok this is the situation...put it at the factory settings...started playing with it. the revo would bogg down when you nail the throttle from a stand still (some times stall) and bog down when it shifted into high.. decided to lean it out some....it made it worse..back to factory setting then richened it...it seemed to get better...but then i fowled glow plug and it was my only one....know im just thinking it through...help
i have read manual several times and watched dvd
thinking about getting a temp gun also</p>

the idle needs to be lowered. set the truck on a block so the wheels dont touch and adjust the idle until the wheels stop moving. the rest i dont know much about. never was good at tuning

RE: newbie needs help with tuning motor
Kinda don't quite agree, most people i've heard said itis never a good idea tohave the engine running under no load. If the revo is on the ground and not jerking forward, than the idle is fine. If it is jerking or moving forward, make sure that the trim is centered and adjust the idle screw from there.
If the engine is running and you flip, that shouldn't aid in fowling the plug. It's only if the engine is running way too rich or way too lean to fowl the plugs, but apart from that i'm not sure how else it would fowl the plug.
With tuning, how much are you turning the needles? Also when going back to factory settings how much are you turning your LSN (how many turns to flush)?
Personally to me, when the engine boggs down or stalls from start is it because you are running too rich, but when it boggs down when shifting than it's running too lean. Have you done the pinch test?? How many seconds does the engine last before cutting?
Answer some of those question and i might have a better idea. Apart from that, that is all I can give you. Hopethis helps.

RE: newbie needs help with tuning motor
when i would put it back to factory settings i would open the LSN 1.5-1.75 turns from closed. that is what the ops manual said was the factory setting. after that i would not mess with the LSN. i never did the pinch test bc i never got the HSN set. i was under the impression that you didnt mess with the LSN or idle until everything else was set.
RCpanda...on your nitro cars do they free wheel when off the ground? i know your not suposed to rev the motor with no load...but when mine revo lands on its lid...which is alot...the wheels motor revs up because there is no load on motor...thanks.
looks forward to more tuning once i get a glow plug

I would think that the revo's wheels should move a little when it is off the ground. If you have ever been in a truck, for example: dodge ram, the truck still crawls forward even when you are off the gas. Otherwise that is the only connection that I can make. I have an emaxx so I wouldn't know if nitro rc's wheels are supposed to move when they are off ground, though.

That is partically true that you don't mess with the LSNuntil you got the HSNset. But you would still need to do the pinch test to see if you are possibly too rich or lean. When doing the pinch test, the engine should last 2-3 seconds, then rev up a little before cutting. Then the tune is approximately correct. With the idle, just adjust it while the revo is on the ground, if the revo is moving or jerking foward just lower it.
With me, Ihave a T-maxx and when Iflip, the wheels do spin. This is because the truck has no load and the clutch shoe is grabbing on the CBmaking the wheels spin. It's normal. All Ido when stopping the wheels from spinning is by applying the brakes. The reason why the engine revs get higher is because there is simply no load.
