RE: DL-55 Question
Bob,
Your choice of oil for your break-in is a personal matter. If you are going to use Lawn Boy at 32:1 anyway for your break-in . . . . Well, go for it.
Run a batch or two of Lawn Boy and then go to your Royal Purple.
The police are not going to bust down your door and take your engine away from you.
Who knows what the guy used in the other engine before you bought it? It is a good engine isn't it?

As for my used Zenoah? Runs great now, had to rebuild the carb, the diaphram was dried up from sitting for a little over two years. After getting it running, it started dieing and acting like it was not getting fuel. So I went back in and found the screen in the carb was loaded with gunk. It was replaced when it was rebuilt. Upon closer examination it turned out the little fuel that was still in the tank when I had the eye injury had done some drying out and turned into some kind of buildup on the clunk. Once I fueled it and started to run it the deposit was rubbed off sucked into the fuel line, and caught by the screen. So I cleaned out the tank and replaced the fuel line and added a clunk with a screen, and put a filter on my fuel can.
Here are some pictures,,,,

RE: DL-55 Question
What does old fuel setting around in a tank have to do with break in?
Keep in mind that Lawn Boy is Marketed by the Toro Lawn Mower Company. They buy the oil from Citgo and have their name put on it. I doubt they even package it?

So, Break in, What oil do you think is good, I have heard a lot about Lawn Boy Ashless. How many gallons, etc?

RE: DL-55 Question
I just run the Pennzoil Air cooled two stroke oil all the time at 32:1
I do not use anything else.
My friend bought a new gas engine and he ran a couple gallons of Pennzoil at 32:1 through it and then changed to Amsoil at 60:1 a couple years ago. To my surprise, it still runs fine.

RE: DL-55 Question
There is absolutely no reason or requirement for a "break-in oil" or a "break-in prop". Just pick an oil you like and use it from day one, if your one that likes to use the thinner oil ratios, use a little extra for the first few gallons if your kind to your engines but not a different oil.

RE: DL-55 Question
Thanks for the reply, I have read some replies you have made on other threads, and you sound like you know what you are talking about. I thought that a break in period was needed for rings to set to the cylinder liner, etc. Probably like Nitro 2 stroke motors, run a little rich at first, make sure it has enough lubricant. I am no hot shot pilot by any means, I just enjoy getting in the air, and down in one piece!
When I buy something new, I take care of it, I find that the better care you take the longer it lasts. Thats why I asked about the DLE track record, and the break in procedure. Thanks for the input.

RE: DL-55 Question
I think you have enough feed back on the engine so I will just throw my 2 cents on the plane. Take a look at the Extreme Flight planes. I have the Extra 300 50cc and i have found nothing to pick at. There are three of the Yaks flying at our field and they are awsome also.

RE: DL-55 Question
Yes, good feedback on the DLE. So far, (unless something new hits the market) I am looking at three yaks, all 50cc size,
1. AeroWorks
2. Pilot RC
3. Extreme Flight
Don't want to start any brand wars, all three have great reviews, I have been doing a lot of reading, and these three look to be at the top of the heap!

RE: DL-55 Question
Royal Purple is starting to become the "reliable" oil for gas at my field. Doesn't matter whether it's a "reliable" gas engine, or a Chinese engine. A decent number of gas flyers are doing better with this oil, even performance, not just realiability.

RE: DL-55 Question
Royal Purple, Red Lion, and Amsoil are the three big ones I have seen at our field. A friend uses Red Lion on his DL-100, a few guys with big DA's and 3W's use Amsoil, and one or two use Royal Purple, I got a quart at our FX3D event this spring, and so far I like it. I try not to hound these guys too much about my future plans for a 55cc plane until the time comes, then I will begin to pick their brain.

RE: DL-55 Question
Bob,
I just got my Pilot EXTRA 260 30% completed with a DLE 55 for my first 55CC. I thought gas was going to be this huge learning curve. The DLE makes it so easy. I just started flying it and already have 2 gallons through it. I haven't touched anything on it from the box it runs perfect. I have been running Lawn boy through it but I don't think it matters. The engine and plane are unlimited!!!!!!! Go for it you will love it.

I forgot I also put the JTEC Pitts muffler on it. Sounds great! I would love to suport an American company such as DA but for the price I do not see the value.

RE: DL-55 Question
Hi Bob, sorry to hear about your eye prob', but glad to hear you're flying again. My flying buddies here in the UK are using dl50 and dle55, and they think they are great! I have a dl50 in a World Models Extra 300, and I love it. Once it's fired on choke, it starts after about 3 flicks.
Also I have a dle55 with a can in a Hanger 9 Carden Yak 54 which is almost completed, if my dl50 is anything to go by, I'm confident the dle55 will run and fly great too.
Enjoy.
Best of luck bud.

So you could not have read 10 pages or so??
ORIGINAL: Saito_56
the DL-50 & 55 have been out for a while now, There is a thread about the DL-50, but at almost 300 pages, I would hate to have to read it all.
I don't want to start a brand war, just honest opinions about the DL. Thanks for all the replies in advance.

RE: DL-55 Question
Love my DLE-55! Pulls my 15.75lb 89" 30% Edge unlimited vertical at just over 1/2 throttle! I had 2 deadsticks on tanks 6 & 7 but it was due to my LSN being way too rich. At my altitude of 3200ft asl, I had to lean my LSN to under .9 turns out. My timing was also at nearly 40* which I retarded before even flying the thing. Great engine!
