Better the devil you know than the one you don't. If your old soldered pack worked well (except for getting old), stay with a soldered type pack.
"Upgrading" is not necessarily "better".

There's the advantage of testing the cells individually but an 8 cell dry cell pack have as many reasons not to use it.
If soldered packswere problematic,JR, Futaba etc would have moved away fromit. If looked after, soldered packs last for years.That's my experience, but it is a personal choice.

Actually, solder packs are usually more reliable due in part to the possibility of contact corrosion on battery pack holders.

It seems like the general sentiment is with soldered packs. I might order a pack from MaxAmps. They seem to have a good reputation. Its tricky to solder batteries end to end.
Have to make sure those doing it, know what they are doing, or you can end up with a heat damaged cell or two in the pack, which will make it a very expencive paper weight.

I have used both ways. With the "cell holder" I use rechargeable batteries.

The cell holder is a bit of a pain (especially if it needs to be taped to the TX), however, you can check the individual batteries and replace individual cells as needed.

In my case I already had the "cell holder" and 8 extra 2200 mah rechargeable AA batteries.

With the "cell holder" and rechargeable batteries, provided everything fits inside the TX case, you can recharge the batteries just as you would a soldered pack.

Would I go and buy the "cell holder" and batteries to do it that way.........NOPE. I would buy a soldered pack.
