DLE 60 and 40 twins- Fun with the Numbers
I was thinking what the DLE 20 and 30 might be like if they were to make them into twins. Here are the No's I have come up with using the 55 and 111 as a benchmark.
DL 20 820gr. and 2.5 hp = DL 40 twin 1566gr. and 5.07 hp
DL 30 910gr. and 3.7hp = DL 60 twin 1738gr. and 7.5 hp
Using the same formula, I get a DL 85 single at 1858gr. and 8.62hp
Just playing with the no's to see what might be. I'm not sure the 40cc twin would make sense but the 60cc twin no's look interesting.

At 100cc twins become viable but little twins are just expensive novelties. If you want to spend more money for more weight and less power then just buy an OS300, at least it would look good. I know there is a vibration advantage but who cares about that?

I'm not so sure you are correct. The DL 55 makes 4.19hp per kg of engine weight. Using these no's, the 60cc twin would make 4.3hp per kg of engine weight. I think the 60cc twin would be a nice option for the large 89" 1400 + sq. inch "50cc" planes

So Kweasel can just fly off with his negativity (just a kidding jibe now).

Im not negative on twins, I fly a converted OPS maxi60. Its everybody else asking "why did you do that". I could have got a used DA100 for the price and weight of this rig. Its all these more common modelers that industry needs to support a new product and they arent at all interested in spending a penny more than necessary. They wont even buy a decent muffler.

YES!If you like twins they are one sweet smooth engine. Very quiet even on standard muffs. On a QQ Yak, all up weight is about18 lbs and will do anything you asked of it..Unlimited vertical, hover and would pull it out easy enough..Once broken in and your final tweaks done they're hard to beat..The one downfall is they weigh 1lb+ over the singles..If your worried about your weight it's not for you..If you don't mind a bit of extra weight they can't be beat . Thats the word!

But they are not cheap, which is THE primary requirement for 98% of the viewers in this forum. The pound difference really doesn't have any impact. The engine produces so much torque you can fly a plane weighing many pounds more with the 3w twin than could be done with a single of the same displacement.

T.O.M. Cheap is relative. Seagull needs to take his 55 to 111 DLE to a price estimate as well.
I bet most would see that there is a real possiblity.
Several months ago I emailed DLE with just such a question.... No response.
Jeody I'm sorry for the HK mention I have deleted it

Time frame will be nice. I'm planning on a 89" Slick 540 with DA 70 when it is available. DA is beta testing that combo now. If a DLE 60 or 70R is coming out, I would like to know. Just set up a 71" Slick with DLE30 and with a gallon used, I am totally impressed thus far. Can I get a PM with info? Hell, even to test.

the problem with twins is that they are not twice as powerful as the single they're based on. More cylinders = more losses.
The fudge factor is is about 75% more power for each cylinder added.

they are not always heavier, i have ( and jodi has or did have ) a twin or 2 that easily pulls the same as any single cylinder and weighs the same too give or take a few grams. if only the manufacturer had been reliable, he'd be selling tons.</p>

More power and less weight is not always desirable. Not everybody flies 3D or IMAC. These engines are perfect for scale and warbirds.
Hmmmm.. I thought it was said DLE would never come out with these twins? I don't buy it that a 60cc twin competes with the 55cc single as they have 2 different applications.
Regardless, I am looking forward to the engine they release in this size.

I'm thinking $450-$500 for a DLE 60 Twin... Which Troy Built Models announced they were taking preorders for yester day in their Newsletter.
