How to troubleshoot battery vs. other issues - Academy GV2 RTR
Hello,
This is my first post so if it's in an incorrect category, I apologize. I was hoping for some assistance
My brother in law recently came back from Korea and brought back some toyRC cars that he had to keep busy when he was in the Army. One of them "didn't work", so he sent it to me and Im trying to troubleshoot the issue. It's a RCbuggy, brand Academy and its the GV2 RTRmodel....the whole box and intrsuctions are in Korean. This looks like the same one http://www.redrc.net/2007/11/academy...-ep-2wd-buggy/
Down to the issue - I've tried charging the battery pack several times, powering up the remote followed by the car, and it powers on fine. The wheels rotate fine and the power light is activated on the car. Pressing the trigger initially works and the car moves forward, slowly, but dies out within a few feet. The light on the car flickers and eventually dies out.
I tried testing the battery on my mutlimeter and it reported ~6.2 V - not sure if thats good. Any advice on how to narrow down the problem. Thanks!

It sounds like the battery isn't getting charged. Try to put those test leads into the connector and then plug into the charger. The voltage should come up at least 2 volts and stay there for the full charge process. It looks like this is a std. 6 cell pack and 6.2 volts indicates either 1-2 bad cells OR a completely discharged pack. Maybe you have friend with another charger that can try to charge it for you.

HiGuver,
Thanks for your response. I have the test leads connected to the battery right now, with the DC charger plugged in and it's reading a steady 6.45 volts...its been about 10 minutes now. Unfortunatelyi dont know anyone to borrow another charger from. Do you think I should purchase a replacement charger and see how it works? If that is unsuccessful I can the get a new battery.
Thanks again!

So it didn't come up very much at all even after 10 minutes. I'm not sure what type of charger you have, but could you get a volt reading from the charger with it powered on , yet unplugged from the battery? If it's quite high then we can probably assume the charger itself is working (if it's a simple wall charger) and my guess is you have 1-2 bad cells in the battery itself.

Hi guver,
I unplugged the battery and plugged in the mutlimeter leads to the charger - the reading didn't change much, its at 6.47 volts directly out of the wall charger. I should note, it looks like the charger is also foriegn, probably from Korea, with a US adapter on it. (see attaced pictures). What does it mean if the battery and charger readings are almost the same?

If you think the charger or battery is an issue, any suggested sites to purchase a new one would be greatly appreciated.

It means that the charger is also faulty. My 2 favorite sites for NIMH batts and cheap chargers are Tower Hobbies and HobbyKing. There's many many more good online retailers and even more options for chargers and then even more options for batts.

I'd try a new charger 1st that setup looks scary [:@]
also crap transformers like that are notorious for not doing a good job.
Expect to pay close to $50 for a decent charger. Also might as well buy a lipo compatible charger while you are at it seeing I find them the same price or cheaper than NiMh/NiCd only chargers. Bonus with the newer lipo chargers is they can charge all types of batteries, and generally have more settings than the NiMh/NiCd ones

When buying first 50 watt charger the best bang for buck is probably HobbyKing. They've got a half dozen 50 watt chargers for $20 or so. They even have a 80 watt AC/DC charger for $30 called "justanothercharger" http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...ger_w_PSU.html
