Default GSP Yak54 is here!! I am liking this one!

Well I was very hestitant at first to buy another GSP ARF based on my past exp. with the few that I have had.But then I was like what the heck it is only 299.00.

Well as it so turns out I am very impressed & happy with this plane-72" Yak54!! I have been wanting a Yak54 for some time now and was awaiting this one to hit the market.I bought mine as soon as it hit GSP's site.I jsut received it wed. This is a very nice plane-good covering job with no wrinkles-very clean/neat layed out fiberglass fuse.Comes with a very complete hardware package & nice fiberglass cockpit tub.I esp love how the cowl fits on...They have designed it too slide in place in a recessed channel which gives a very nice secure fit .I have slide the wings & horizontal stabs on their tubes & they fit very nicely with no gaps or issues.I cant wait to fly this baby next weekend.Power was going to be a Saito Twin but the cowl is not quite wide enough so I will be putting a Saito 180 on her with smoke

Looks good to me... I want one of these babies to... THE BIG QUESTION... Did they fix the wing shear web issue? Their Katana 140 had big problems with the spar shear web wood grain going in the wrong direction... Have you looked along the inside ... if you can see the spar... and checked the shear web?

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_92...2Cshear/tm.htm
POST #67
Anyone have shear webs running parallel to the spars? I read on another post of wings failing, and I'd like to find out if the problem has been remedied. Any reason why I should steer clear of this plane? Thanks!

Have a good one...

Hawk

From what I can tell by putting the wing up to a direct light source & looking inside. It appears to me that they rectified potential structure issues. Here is a pic of a wing..It looks good & strong to me

Sounds good... I know they have replacement wings for the Katana.. Jet-hobbies sent me a new set... So I would imagine it's safe to say they fixed the wing problem...

Keep us posted on putting yours tegether.. I'm real tempted to get one... I wonder how well a ZDZ-40 will work on the nose?

Thanks for the pic...

Hawk

I would imagine that a ZDZ40 would work just fine-a bit over powered of course so throttle would be absolutely essential.I was gonna put my Saito270 Twin on mine but even it would be too much for this baby plus I would have to butcher the cowl so the heads could exit.I'd rather just save my Saito twin for my PW 300 now

The Yak is suppose to come out at around 11.5-12 lbs so a Saito180 will pull it just great.Thats what I am planning to put on mine ,getting ready to run up to the hobby shop in a bit as a matter of fact to buy a 180 so I can get my Yak all ready to fly for next weekend.I already have done most of the work on mine today-not much to do to get flight ready.I opted to use Robart hinge points on the control surfaces, they are all installed .All servos are mounted

I went with Futaba 9402's on ailerons
Hitec digital 5945 on elvs.
1- hitec 5735 1/4 digital on rudder with pull/pull

Went with a Tru Turn 2 1/2 '' hub spinner
I am planning to put smoke on her as well

I am really looking forward to flying this Yak next weekend

I had gsp early arf's and now I own a current kit, I think they switched or improved manufacturing of the Arf's The wings are built up and all laser cut parts through-out. The fiberglass work is great and they now laser cut lite ply formers inside the fuselage. I'm impressed, the guy's that have the older planes are hard pressed to buy again and it's a shame, their missing out on the good ones. I laugh when I see the GSP ad's thou, the zero ad is completly wrong, I wish that Irwin would open one of the boxes and see for himself. The wings are iron on film and not solar-tex and they're built up wood and not foam core. Keep us posted on the build and flight performance, some of us have to let the public know when a manufacture is changing for the better.

Rad,

Why did you have to put one on order?? I called up GSP & got mine shipped out the same day.I ordered it last monday & had it in at my doorstep on wed. They have plenty of these in stock.GSP has definately improved their quality on the ARF's..I am very impressed with this Yak54 & esp. for the price-299.00..Its a very nice looking plane..Hopefully it flies as great as it looks.I will post my flight report after I fly her next weekend

Geist,

I took some pics in the first posting above, did you want me to snap something different than what you see there?I dont mind if you would like too see something in addition to what is already shown.

Ohh ok I got ya now.Well you will like this Yak54 ,GSP is finally doing the right thing & putting quality products out .The only thing I dont like about this plane is I wish the purple was darker-this purple is like a lavendar color..Hopefully fellow fliers at my field wont think the purple is "Girly" LOL ..I guess I can overlook it tho & live with it.I do like that the Yellow is a dark bright yellow And not pastel looking like it appears on the site. They did an awesome job on the fiberglass fuse-the paintwork is Grade A and the clearcoat is great & very shinny!! The wingtube sleeve is factory epoxied in-everything is epoxied in(including the firewall) & not hotglued .The lasercut formers are very nice & cleanly installed as is the lasercut servo tray.I should have it all complete by mid-week .I will post the completed pics at that time

Steve,

I just got a Yak also. Looks really nice. But I have a question. How do you attach the aluminum alignment pins to the wings? On the info sheet it looks like they are to be epoxied but that doesn't seem secure to me as there isn't much wood on the ends of the wings to glue to. Am I missing something?

Regards,
Jim

its not GSP ... the factory that produces all this is does it for CM Pro, Areo Model Design and a few more ... You can actually order direct ... if you wanna from CM Pro ... e.g. the Super Chipmunk is only $120 direct w/o shipping which won't cost a lot. But I have to say that the YAK is lovely looking ...

I wish they had mounted the elevator servos in the tail.

These are the specs on the plane:

Specs:

Length: 61.5''
Wingspan: 71.5''
Weight: 11.9
Wing Area: 806 Sq. in
Engine 2C: 90-140
Engine 4C: 120-140
Radio: 4 channel 6 servos
Airfoil: Naca-0014
Part # CM036

Only 806 sq in on the wing area I would be real hesitant about putting a ZDZ 40 on anything less than around 1000 sq in of wing area.

You could very easily mount the elv. servos in the tail. With a simple cut out with a Dremel & 1/8 ply servo cutouts you could easily epoxy in from the inside.I Am gonna try mine with the stock setup then if I am not happy with it then I will convert it over to the tail mounted setup.[8D]

A saito 180 should be the perfect combination for this Yak,it is a very light aircraft-11.5-12 lbs.I have about another 6-8 hours left on mine & it will ready to maiden this weekend. It goes together very nicely

Yes the graphics you see on the fuse are pre applied from the factory. They look almost painted on to be honest, the decal lines are hardly even there. The paintwork & clearcoat look awesome -about the best I have seen on a fiberglass fuse straight from a factory line
