Best Engine for Pica Waco 1/5 72"
I want modern looks and good aerobatics on my new Pica Waco 1/5 scale with 72" topwing. I think a G23 gas, and maybe even the G26, makes it too heavy and I know the G23 won't pull it well enough to be hotter than scale. I also have looked at four strokes to make the scale sound that I would love to have if it were cheaper since I think the 120 size may not be enough to pull this plane fast. I like the two stroke 120s but worry about the sound or even an MDS 148.
I would like to do effortless loops, rolls, some short knife-edge, hammer heads and a few tail slides. I'd like to almost (not much) hang the plane on a prop, at least enough to hang real well when I do the tail slides or to easily get me out of trouble.
Which way should I go?

Greg, I won't be able to answer your question but can give you a little insight. I built 3 Pica 1/5 scale Wacos probably 15 to 20 years ago. The first one was powered by an OS 120 4-cycle engine. It flew well but was not very aerobatic. The next 2 were powered by a Zenoah G38. These were highly aerobatic and weighed around 17 pounds.
Of course, today, the G38 is an old design but still a good engine. There is a much wider choice of engines available now including some 4-cycle twins which should pull an 18x10 prop as well or better than the G38. I personally wouldn't be as concerned with the 4-cycle sound as I would be with performance, light engine weight, quiet muffler, and gasoline fuel. The current crop of modern gasoline engines in the 40 cc range needs to be looked at.
The Waco with the right engine is a super plane when it comes to looks and performance. It also does great inverted flat spins.
Welcome to RC Universe, you'll really like it.

I'ver heard the 45cc Homelite is an excellent choice in this range. I'ver read that it actually weighs LESS than some of it's 25cc and 35cc counterparts. I'm going to try this engine in a 80" Byron's CAP 21 that I've been working on. You can get this engine [link=http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=9967]here.[/link] $129.99 is a pretty good price, if you don't mind stripping it out of the chainsaw and getting a prop adapter built.

Hey all,
Gas looks good and I've even looked at 4stroke gas - interesting. My question would then be "short or long shaft?"
Also, would anyone recommend any changes for improved aerobatics such as a longer nose?
