A basic gyro, or rate gyro, reduce the random changes in tail movement thrown at a heli by the environment. They only dampen changes in rate of rotation.
A head hold gyro lockes on to a heading. So if a random environment efect pushes the tail to the left, the HH gyro changes the tail power until the tail moves back to its original position.
Head hold gyros can be used in a 'seperates' configuration without the need for revo mixing on the transmitter, and without an onboard mixer.
Rate gyros require a transmitter capable of revo mixing or an on-board mixer.
