I have been taking off of gravel roads and i've heard that it may be harmful to my engine and decrease the engine life. Does anyone know of any way of putting an air filter over the air intake?

On the cheap you can cut a patch from a pair of pantyhose or stockings (best done when not being worn however), stretch over the carb and secure with a small rubber band or a wire or cable tie.

I've done the panty hose air filter several times and it worked fine. Just be careful to secure it really really really well or it will get sucked into the crank[:@]

There are plenty of commercially available carb air filters out there. Just get one that matches the diameter of your carb opening. 12mm diameter is what I use on a 40 to 50 size 2 stroke engine when I take off from sand.

Those filters are huge and will go into the prop so they can't be used. BruLine filters work well, but they too sometimes extend into the prop - particularly on smaller engines.

If you can't get a BruLine, then use the stockings. You are correct about the gravel ruining your engine. The stockings will keep out the big stuff, but not the fine dust. It's much better than nothing though.

Also, when I use stocking material, I double it up so that when it's stretched the openings are smaller due to overlap.

I've tried an airfilter that I bought from the OS dealer in Singapore. Quite a number of aussie blokes get their supplies at cheaper prices while holidaying in Singapore. The brand of the filter is TETRA and it is basically a cyclindrical 1 inch silicon tube with a metal mesh cap at the top end. Comes in various sizes for different diameter openings and I found that the good thing about it is that the length can be adjusted by cutting the tube to your requirements and then securing with a cable tie. This allows clearance from the prop/cowl opening to be customised to your liking, plus because the filter element is metal, no worries about them getting sucked in. They do cause a slight decrease in rpm, but its minimal as I measured a 200 - 400 rpm fall so only slight detuning is required. I don't know if u guys across the pacific have a distributor for this product there but it really comes in handy when it gets too dry and dusty in summer here.

if your worried about a little dust, oil the filter, will collect even the small junks. be sure to rinse it out often. in fact a piece of cheese cloth oiled works real good. ain't fancy bur works. dick
