RE: savage 4.6 ss
The Savage 4.6 should beat the Revo quite easily actually.
Well in terms of top speed any way.
The Revo averages a top speed of 37.8mph. The new SS 4.6 actually does 44+mph, thats with a 2 speed.
Slap in a 3 speed and your looking at around 47mph which would absolutely murder a Revo in terms of figures anyway.
Obviously know one has tried this yet in practise.
I would love to see a race between the two though.
But If we take other .28 engines as examples, an SH .28 kills a Revo. So why wouldnt a SS .28?

No. The Revo is faster than the Mammoth. We're talking acceleration here also.
You could gear a .25 Savvy with 19/47 gears and it will hit the top speed that you need, but it will take a long time to get there

The stock SS 4.6 will push 44mph, and with the 3 speed should hit 48mph. The three speed only puts out another 10% lowend acceleration and 10% additional top speed. To hit upwards of 50mph like the mammoth, you are going to need some higher gearing, such as a 17 or 18 tooth clutchbell.
Also, since when has speed been that important with monster trucks? I thought we wanted to go any where, and go over anything?

I should have been more specific.
Because I like you could care less if it can go 50mph. What I was talking about was acceleration. Since most of the time you don't have enough of straight away to get these trucks up to top speed any way. What I'm looking for is something that will pull hard off the start, and out of turns. It doesn't matter if your racing or bashing, it's nice to see them go from 0 to OMG in a blink of an eye.[8D]

RE: savage 4.6 ss
i think the reason that the subject has spiraled off topic so completely is because there arent too many essential hop ups for a 4.6ss with a 3 speed if you want to race. It is an SS so you will have built it with a good radio and strong servos, it has raceable wheels/tires out the box so you dont need to change those, the engine should have plenty of power and the 3 speed takes care of the gearing. As far as I know the new SS comes with tougher Diffs. so an old essential is removed there too. It comes with a tuned pipe and high flow airfilter as standard thats those usual bases covered...
but to keep thbirdie happy.... Carbon Fibre TVP's.

Sorry tlhbirdie, ahab is right. you really don't need any thing. Excepet the basic stuff. Hump pack batt, good radio (I like the JR XS3, NO CRYSTALS to worry about), and a high torque steering servo (Hitec has 3 for you to choose from).[8D]
Happy crushing!!!

Also, HPI has been known to give unaccurate information about the statistics of their cars... according to them, the savage ss could go 40+ which isnt necessarily true when you are talking about "straight from the box." The likelyhood of the new savage going 44+ is possible (its got a "sport" engine), but it might also be exhaggerated...

The bigger the bell, and smaller the spur, the faster it can eventually go. So right now the 19/47 combo is as fast as you can make it.
The acutaul top speed from a .25 Savvy with 18/49 gearing is about 33Mph, out of the box. But once the engine breaks in it will go about 36Mph.

RE: savage 4.6 ss
Actually this is very true , I have a wasp .28 geared with 17/49 and when i changed to 17/47 the truck felt slower.
Same like in big cars , I used to have a car that's top speed was higher in fourth gear than fifth gear.
Every engine has it's optimum spur/CB combination so going to higher gearing not always mean higher top speed.

The rat's been clocked on PANYNJ radar at 39mph with the 15t bell, 52t spur, 27xlr, and psycho tires. She took 200 feet to get there and sounded like a demon from hell. A stock mammoth beat her with 45mph in the same run but running side by side, the rat had the mammoth for the first 75 feet or so. I probably could have gotten a little farther before the mammoth caught up but I had to ease off a little and drop the nose. I lost $10. It all depends on the operational rpm of the motor. I know the sirio is a race motor and has all mid and top end. I tried measuring her rpm but the magnetic tape I tried to put on the cb kept coming off around 25k. She's a screamer.

RE: savage 4.6 ss
i would just get some nice tires and stock gearing with a 3 speed and maybe even lowerer gearing because accel. is all you should need. acceleratioon is good for jumping, climbing, crawling, engine, tempature, and many others. jump tell whoevers driving the mammoth to me a man and go to the track and smoke him away. id rather a sh.28 over this k4.6 engine.
sh28 puts out 3.5HP
k4.6 puts out 2.9HP
