RE: Mobil II turbine oil
THere are 4 cans of Aeroshell 500 - LOT 79053.
I also have several (12) cans of Exxon turbine ioil with a MIL-L-23699C spec on the can but looking at the lid it looks like this might be really old oil
On the tops of the cans, there are numbers like
B460
6 1989
and
B460
10 1989
Which makes me think that it could be really old oil.
Does it matter - I'm happy to buy new oil if that is the safe route but would hate to throw out good oil.
Thanks

Your exxon oil is past its use by date. If you send it to me I will dispose of it atno cost to yourself.

My Feedback: (1)
RE: Mobil II turbine oil
When I started with turbines 4 years ago, It was with a Mercury at that time the written recomended oil was Exxon ?? but when I questioned Jim @ AMT over the phone on what oil to use he said that the MOBIL II was superior to the Exxon as is related to any residual soot residue left in the tail cone.
So I have used nothing but Mobil II in my AMT's and SWB as I can buy it @ the local FBO where my son was a CFII.
FWIW never paid more than 10$ a quart................

I bet my oil is older than yours! Rust on the outside of the cans, no zip code, and it is Mobil with a flying red horse, made by Socony. So, it might be sixties or seventies. I will take a pic tomorrow.
Age...how does it affect oil?

Your oil has been in the ground for millions of years! A few years in a sealed can won't matter. I have heard the food inside cans that Captain Scott took to the pole were still ok after 60 or so years.
Bet you didn't know that ET!

That's "hyGroscopic". Mister Bigwords. And things don't "float to the bottom" of a solution, either.
You missed Mr. Cafferty's eighth grade science class.
As far as arctic expeditions, that food is not REALLY edible unless it was pasturized and packed in a vaccum.
You know about that failed expedition from around 1901? They finally figured out that the LEAD used to solder the cans closed gave them all lead poisoning and they ended up going nuts and killing each other. True story.

So before I ruin my turbine, for the price of a can of oil, I take it that the consensus is that it is fine to use this oil?

Somehow I didn't think you would let me get the last word on the food cans!
Henceforth Treadstone 21 will be addressed as "Mr Bigwords" or maybe "Mr Wrongspellin" ?

Here's the oil...maybe the same oil used to lubricate the dogs on the Peary Expedition:
