The KOLO Flies-New twin design
The King Of Left Overs, KOLO, flew 3 times today. It's a pusher-puller, twin boom design by my flying buddy and WW II Marine aviator, Carl "Flaps" Laffert.
It flies well, tracks well, does good acro and doesn't scare the pilot (me). Some of his designs that I fly are pretty scary. This one seems to have no bad habits. It flies a little nose heavy, but we can move the battery. Needs a good bit of elevator for inverted. Rolls pretty fast. Nice Immelmanns and Cuban-8's. Nice landings. Ran out of fuel on the front engine on the 3rd flight. Single engine is nothing, just slower.
The whole plane cost us next to nothing other than what we had available and not in use. I did order a couple of 11-7 pusher props and that was my big expense to the project.
Wings: Top Flite Corsair partially built that was given to him.
Fuselage: Sheet balsa.
Tail: Built from 1/4 square laminated from 1/8 sheet strips in his bals box.
Booms: Ultracote cardboard tubes with 2 coats of epoxy finishing resin.
Landing gear & wheels: From a Sky Raider kit we made into a twin and used 3/16 wire and good wheels.
Covering: A mix of left over Monokote on top and Ultracote on the bottom.
Decals from a SkyRaider Mach II kit.
Engines: Magnum .52FS we weren't using, left over from a crashed Grumman Widgeon.
Spinners: ARF plastic ones I normally replace in kits.
Radio: My JR 8103 TX, old servos and an old Hitech ham freq receiver (they don't make those any more).
