melted spur gear
sorry if this has been asked but keep melting spur gear on sav x. Gone thru 1/2 doz. mesh checks fine when put back,bearings good on clutch bell,cleaned c/b and clutch shoe,even scuffed both c/b & shoes to help any slippage,but checked c/b temp & it over 200 any advise and help greatly thanked. also would it be wise to upgrade clutch shoe since im running the factory shoes?

can you tighten your slipper down tight on the X? if you can tighten it down and havent yet, you should try to run one like that just to see.

spur gear tightened all the way and have even tried with spur gear nut backed off1/4-1/2 turn as it says in book. still melting spur. Last gear i ran lasted about 5-10 min before melting. wasnt driving hard either. could feel heat coming off c/b that when i temped it and it showed 200 on temp gauge.

Get a set of aluminum clutch shoes. The stockers are slipping and building heat, that in turn warms up the spur gear and softens it enough that the teeth just rip off of it.
Go ahead and get two new sets of clutchbell bearings too. The heat has probably already sent yours on a path to destruction, and you should always keep a spare set on hand.

The only spur gear I ever had a problem with was when I was breaking in my engine and the CB got hotter then my engine and melted the spur do to the sorry stock clutch shoes slipping. I put alloy clutch shoes in and now in about 3 gallons have not had a problem since.

any good suggestions on whether hpi has any or what brand to go with and does anyone know if there are any such thing as carbon or carbon fiber clutch shoes

The stock shoes are the carbon ones. I'm using Team Losi LST2 shoes and they are fine so far. The shoes, springs, and washers came together for $20 from the LHS and they work with the stock nut.

I am running Nova alloy shoes with the stock CB but have been told you need to run a harden CB. I have around 3 gallons on mine since I put the alloy shoes in it and I probably need to check the shoes and CB which I have a harden one to put on it now.

I melted my first spur on my 4.6. But after tightening the slipper right up and drilling 6 2mm cooling hols in the end on the clutch bell I've had no problems in 2 gallons.

hey, just wanted to thank yall for the melted spur gear issue. went to my lhs in archdale and got some aluminum clutch shoes. Ran almost a gal thru. No melted spur gear yet

Heck, these BRAND new shoes should not be slipping. my plan is a vented clutchbell and some new bearings. Then if that dont work, I'll go alum. shoes. Sound good? the only reason I dont wqanna do aluminum shoes yet is bc I JUST put these on and not even a tank thourgh it.

I put an STS. 28 in my savage and had a little bit of slippage issues with the stock clutch shoes switched umm over to mugen aluminum three shoe and no problems so far by the way im still running stock clutrch bell and springs.
