I think my S-25 temp is too high
The temps on my S-25 motor in my Savage are around 260 F. Isn't this too hot?? How can I lower the temps? I tried to richen the mixture but it didn't lower it that much. I've never took the temp of my motor before so I don't know what it usually runs at. I am just concerned because I took out a head shim for more compression and then I took the temp and noticed it was high.

its not that high i have had my engine running at around 300F it depends how the engine is running if it still runs normaly its ok but if it sounds a bit different or is running a bit weird then yes it is to high for that engine

260* is sweet....... Don't complain.....
Anything above 300* is concerning.... BUT as long as you have a GOOD smoke trail from idle to full throttle, and keep the tral once you reach and maintain full throttle DO NOT worry. Smoke means you're getting lube.

From what i've heard the s-25 is at its best at 300 so 260 is fine. And like JayC said as long as your satisfied with the power output and have a good smoke trail your golden.

There ya go......
Basically......... any Nitro Glow runs great between 250* to 285*....
I ran my HPI K4.6 at 350* and it lasted for 9 gallons. It started to lose pinch at 5, but it ran for a solid 9.

Thanks guys. Sounds great. Can't wait to try it more tomorrow now that I'm not worried about my temp.

My old S25 4.1 would run best at temps between 250F and 260F. Below 250F and it would run doggish and above 260F it would start to stutter at WOT.

RE: I think my S-25 temp is too high
Has anybody tried a better cooling head? I was looking on ebay and found Nova heads made of 7075 aluminum for around $68 US, and American CNC Machining heads made of 6061-T6 aluminum for around $10 US. Which is better? The website for the cheaper one says its better at disipating heat, but who knows? Do you? I'm liking the cheaper one because, well, it's cheaper. I missed out on a Nova head on ebay for $14 but missed it by a few minutes cause the Canucks game I was watching went into overtime. Dammit! We lost the game too.

The CNC head of 6061 will disperse heat faster then a 7075 head.
The lower the number, the softer the aluminum, therefore will disperse heat more quickly.
However it is more fragile..so watch the "head" first landings.

Hey forklift
What fuel are you running and what % of nitro is it.
If you are running 20% then one shim removed should be OK.
If you are running anything over 20% nitro then you may want to
put shim back in because it could cause detonation like polar bus has stated.
My son and I both run ported and polished S-25 motors
on 30% nitro and we run between 260 and 290 degrees all day long.
Many gallons through both engines.

RE: I think my S-25 temp is too high
Hey guys. Thanks for all the info, this stuff is good to know. I'm running 30% HPI Power Fuel, cause thats what the guy at the hobby shop told me to run when I bought it. So far the fuel has been good to me and the truck runs fine. But I like playing with motors. It's that eternal quest for more power. Especially free power. Thats why I took out a head shim and is why I am interested in porting my s-25. All I have done since removing the shim is just start up the truck in my shop, it has been too rainy to take it outside lately. I'm getting the 3spd in a few days and will definately be taking the truck out after that. I haven't been able to run my truck at home cause we just moved near the beach and there are sound bylaws and way too many really old people. Oh well, Come on summer!

Are you sure that softer aluminum will disperse heat better than a more dense alloy? Generally, the denser the material, the better heat is absorbed and transferred.

RE: I think my S-25 temp is too high
you dont have your manual for that engine? little booklet that gave you all the specs and info about the engine.
You will notice that HPI says 275 being the highest safe temp you should run with that engine.
Do you have good performance once the engine has warmed to that temp?
If so, your doing fine. Each engine independently will like to run at a different temp. Also alot of other factors that play into it are Ambient Conditions, the plug your using, and the fuel that your using..
Dont be a victim of tuning by temp, just get it running sweet, and temp it to make sure your not overheating..
BTW - manuals are easly found at HPI's site or contact CS.

However thats pretty common temp ranges..
i have heard and seen alot of people running there engine at 300. But i myself wouldnt let it get that hot...
you go through alot of plugs?
Love your Avatar BTW- just classic... i need one of them.....
