Default ZDZ 80 enough engine for Carden 35% Extra 330?

I have a new ZDZ 80 looking for an airframe. I would like to have a Carden, but not sure the ZDZ 80 would be enough for it. Not worried about 3D, just normal aerobatics. Any input appreciated!

Can't answer for the new ones as the kits are out to the regular guys yet, BUT - the older version had many powered by 80cc engines. They fly good - obvioulsy, a 100cc will give you a lot more power, but an 80 is plenty for regular aerobatics, etc.

I had a carden 35% extra 300 with a 3w 80 twin. I'd say that the zdz will fly it fine. Just don't expect it to be a rocketship.

On a good day, my extra had enough power to hover but climbouts were slow!

I am building one of the 35% Carden Edges for a young fellow in TN right now. I think it will come out pretty close to the stated weight from CARDEN. That being said, You will be fine if BASIC AEROBATICS (non 3D) is what you are looking for. I would be tempted to say you will still be able to do some of the 3D stuff.

Good Luck.

Well, there stated weight is around 27lbs...

The zdz 80 has a good 50lbs static thrust (stated from website, and thrustHP calculator). Thats a 1.54:1 power ratio. That should be good enough to do most 3d/aerobatics. Just wont be the pull of the hovering and torque rolls with the authority of a 100cc. Should be nice though

Bodyman,

I never weighed it, but if I had to make a guess it would be around 28 pounds, and I say this because that is what I was told when I bought it and it sure felt like every bit of that when you picked it up.

The plane is now on its fourth owner. I sold it to a guy on RCU. IF you are interested, email or pm me and I will give you more info.

The plane was a great flier, it just could have used more power at times.

I would think the biggest concern would be balance. I think the zdz 80 single is lighter than some of the 100's out there.

Thanks for the replies guys, keep 'em coming!

CAPtain232- It was a toss-up between the 35% Carden Edge and the Extra 330, I like both, so could still change my mind.

If I didn't already have a new ZDZ 80 in the box waiting for something to put it on, I would probably get a DA-100 for it. I just hate to have a good engine lying around doing nothing I started out originally thinking about a H9 Sukhoi, but then decided I could get a 35% Carden for the same price, and I would rather build a kit anyway, so here I am. Besides, I have a Lanier 37% Sukhoi on the bench now.
